What's wrong with athletes caring more about money than winning?

Cause people have this childhood fairytale perception of what professional sports is. Everyone plays for the love of the game, winning is the most important thing, play hard give 100% every play. That's what's coaches tell us growing up and we think it translates to grown men and pros but it doesn't. Once you've reached the ultimate reward which is making it to the league and getting that contract then it becomes harder to play with that same intensity and drive.
But critcs forget it becomes a job. And it really is just a means to get paid just like everybody else's 9 to 5. It's the same despite what people want to think. You don't wanna go in everyday and go hard and neither do they.

You're absolutely right, but I wouldn't call it a "childhood fairytale". Sports is a social and political construct too, a way of entertaining the masses, selling values, fueling nationalism (in international comp), molding the youth, chanelling young men's aggressivity, etc etc etc...there's nothing childish about sports when you really think about it. That's why people project themselves so much into sports, and indeed complain about money having taken such a big part. That's also why you have die-hard fans.

I don't get mad at players, it's always "Well if they get 100 million dollars, imagine how much his boss is making". What I do get mad at as a fan is complacency, and thats regardless of how much money the player is making. For example I'm not mad at Noah for his godawful contract, because we all know he's always injured yet tries to compete when he's out there. I'm mad at Phil Jackson for giving him that contract.

Doesn't winning bring you the most most money though :ohhh:
Jordan wouldn't be a billionaire owner right now if he didn't have chips

Not necessarily. Robert Horry didnt accumulate more money than Scottie Pippen.

Also, Peyton Manning will have made more in his 18 seasons than Tom Brady will in his first 18 seasons

Money does not go bad at age 40. Your career can be a knee injury away from being over.

The goal is to have both a ring and the money.

That's why I someone like Jamie Collins probably doesn't care that he got traded to the Browns even though the Patriots won a ring. He has a ring already from two years ago, now he's going to get that paper.

I've never understood why people get mad at athletes for paper chasing. Unlike the rest of the working population, their profession is over by 40 (best case scenario). I'd sleep good as NBA player if I was getting my stats, max contracts but it didn't translate into me getting a championship.

I'd rather be the all star that didn't take pay cuts.
