No it's not wrong, some people have a very strong sense of personal justice. I would take that accusation against my mom very serious and defend her.

I'd say yes because it's a conflict of your personal interests. Cruel stance but I'm not going to defend someone that I feel is in the wrong. I'm sure the rules change depending on the situation though. Concerning the convenience stance no it's not. Defending someone can be very inconvenient but it's about if you felt right about defending that person.

As somebody pointed out earlier, he probably did it thinking it would earn him brownie points when that is the wrong reason to cape. Take trying to win favor from somebody out of the equation and it just doesn't make logical sense most times.
