Not just that but the subconsious connection (due to single parent homes) that most black folks have to their mothers. Usually your family matriarch (a grandmother) is the final say on most things. And or is the foremost authority in black homes, even in ones with men present and entrenched. Mothers are more lauded and celebrated in our culture, mothers/women are more visible in our social movements. During interactions BETWEEN African-Americans, the cultural context is usually one of female dominance (i.e. as a kid you ask your mom can you go play outside and not your dad...or your dad defers to the mother).

So while the black community may be (in some cases) considered matriarchal, the overall culture of america is male dominated, thus when interactions between subcultures happen it is usually a patriarchal one.

Its not absolute, but because of the structural racism of America, black society HAD to become matriarchal in order to survive.
