When and why did lyricism stop advancing?

the age of the singles knocked out rappers that could actually spit.
So instead of having to craft a whole album, people are just trying to get that hit single that will get downloads.

It really isnt about rapping anymore on the mainstream...you still have those rappity rap types that will never blow up...but you have to be in a certain mood to listen to that.

What about Pun? He went super duper lyrical that same year and went Platinum. In fact, his singles were more lyrical than Canibus honestly. But he made them catchy.

yup pun was definitely in that class too...would've been interesting to see how his career turned out had he not passed prematurely...Still Not a Playa was a huge hit and the type of tracks bis was just incapable of making...i see Pun jay-z'ing it up had he lived

I would say sometime in the lag time when illmatic became popular... id say around 98. When nikkaz started thinkin "running like a cheetah" and "monkey rhythm" was lyricism... and randomly throwing incoherent lines together.

I just think there are a lack of singles/artists willing to take a risk.

Hip-hop runs its self, it shouldn't be corporations and algorithms dictating what is play on radio and when. If the south had the drive and freedom to push their own record labels (No Limit, CMR) and had some content and substance to their music besides ass-shaking, I think things nowadays would be 100% different.

A recent example is this song. It should have been all over the radio, pumping from car radios, on the block, etc...But people aren't going to listen to the likes of Nas and other artists who "wanna kick knowledge" :stopitslime:

Also, our people are to blame too. Just because an image is being pushed to us, it doesn't mean we have to consume it. There are probably 99% of 100 black people who can name all the Jordan releases this year, but won't be able to drop knowledge on any political, race or current event because they have no vested interest in educating themselves

People are only enslaved when they let themselves to be.

Lyricism != boring, non club music
