Like others said, sponsors. HBO allows nudity and cursing because as a premium channel, they rely on subscriptions instead of sponsors.

When it comes to broadcast and basic cable channels, television programming has always had to be more careful about what it says on the air. However, in recent years, basic cable has cared less and less about saving the sensitive ears of the viewing public. No, they’re not just swearing willy-nilly during daytime television, but some of the more late night programming on basic cable has started to care less and less about tiptoeing around language.
In fact, SyFy and USA, both networks owned by NBCUniversal (a subsidiary of Comcast), are now throwing caution to the wind and will be dropping f-bombs without censoring them on air, and they already started to let them fly earlier this year.
Previously, swearing on SyFy and USA stuck to the guidelines laid out by the Federal Communications Commission, but as a basic cable channel, their Standards and Practices division was not actually beholden to follow those rules strictly. Instead, they answer to their advertisers, who traditionally don’t like it when things get controversial on television programming, and that includes salty language, especially when it comes to network television like NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX. So they’ve kept things clean for the most part.
However, basic cable channels have started to push the envelope. The word “shyt” has been thrown around a lot more on networks like FX, AMC, and Comedy Central. The latter was even the first to bring uncensored usage of “fukk” to basic cable by creating their late night programming block called “The Secret Stash,” which began with the airing of the R-rated film adaptation South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. They don’t have that block anymore, but their late night programming still airs the uncensored versions of movies and stand-up specials.
The only thing holding back basic cable networks from using what is considered to be more vulgar language is their advertisers. To keep things clean, they usually dip the audio of either the “f” or the “k” whenever “fukk” is said in an episode. But according to Buzzfeed, USA and SyFy have worked that all out because their stance now is “when language — ‘fukk’ specifically — is deemed important to the style or plot of a show, Syfy and USA now allow it.” That means the episode gets slapped with a TV-MA rating so audiences know it’s intended for mature audiences only.
Fans of The Magicians on SyFy might have already noticed this change. Ever since the third season premiered on SyFy back in January, they’ve been dropping f-bombs uncensored, a change that was celebrated by the show’s co-creator Sera Gamble on Twitter:
There have been a few other instances of “fukk” being said on basic cable, one of them being USA letting the word drop clearly into an episode of Mr. Robot. AMC and FX have also thrown the word out there a few times during the first airings of new episodes of their hit TV shows like The Walking Dead or American Crime Story: The People vs O.J. Simpson, but this is the first time any networks have addressed an overarching change in their Standards and Practices when it comes to language.

British television spouts off what would be considered vulgar language all the time, at least in their later programming hours. Meanwhile, American television still dips audio, bleeps curse words or dubs over vulgar language. While some viewers will see this as the continued decay of western society and common decency, this is nothing to get up in arms about. Not only do shows reflect the way people actually talk in the real world, but hearing some naughty language is nothing compared to the violent imagery that is shown on television all the time. Is it really that much worse to hear “fukk” on a TV show than to see a human body gruesomely dismembered on The Walking Dead? The answer is fukk no.

Nah it was Shield with the language and Nip/Tuck with the sex. They both came out in 02 I think. Not SOA.

they were always worried about sponsors pulling out which is why they self-censored their content. I hate censored content and love curse words. so I'm all for these channels dropping as many f-bombs as they want.

atlanta could easily be on HBO or showtime. if they passed on the show, that's their fukkup.
showtime currently has a good amount of original programming I fukk with. especially compared to hbo and starz. and each showtime original series gives u a full 12 episodes a season. I remember last year when homeland started 6 months later than normal. what did showtime do instead? they gave us another full 12 episode season of shameless in the same year to make up for it

I actually think HBO will try to cook up some content in the next few years to surpass FX. They're about to lose the TV rights to Fox movies if the Disney deal ends and they'll only be left with Universal, Warner, and old movies.
In order to fill that time they'll probably try to focus more on original programming then they already are. They need to get out of the mindset that they can only have 3 to 4 shows running at once.
I feel like FX has something new on every night.

They're lucky Westworld popped off because they woulda been in real trouble after thrones.
The Deuce was cool last fall but no one watched it.
Their last big show ratings wise was Big Little Lies over a year ago.
FX has given us 4 or 5 dope shows right now and HBO gives us s5 of Silicon Valley And Barry.
They do have the 2 highest rated non Walking Dead cable shows on tv yes but they are so top heavy and the rest of the lineup is so weak that it's like a triple double but shooting 7-28

There was some bill passed by the fcc back in like 2004 that allowed certain curses to happen after 10 pm, think south park was on the next week they said the word “shyt” like 100 times in the episode lolI think comedy central was doing that shyt for a minute.
After 11 was when they turnt up i think.

HBO is always putting new stuff out. How can channels that have never had anything on the level of what HBO "needs to worry about ending soon" be better than them?
The Leftovers ended last year and premiered to mediocre ratings and very divisive reviews yet ended on people's all time lists. HBO is obviously willing to drop a lot of bread on certain shows budgets (word to the "sequel" to Band of Brothers and The Pacific when that drops) but they've been just as if not relatively more successful churning out quality "low budget" series/limited/miniseries. The channel is annually leading in Emmy nominations for its shows. Those guys can randomly drop something like The Night Of and the shyt gets double digit Emmy noms.
Will losing Game of Thrones hurt? Of course it will. Could you imagine Game of Thrones on another channel?
nikkas talmbout what's HBO gonna do when Game of Thrones is over as if any of these other outlets are dropping anything near Game of Thrones quality. What's FX dropping that's pulling Sons of Anarchy numbers(American Horror Story, maybe)? What's AMC dropping that's seeing Mad Men in quality or even Breaking Bad in quality? There's no such thing as replacing Game of Thrones
I could sit here and list all the stuff they have in pre-production(it's a lot), but that's besides the point. I remember before Game of Thrones dropped and nikkas were more excited for an upcoming Starz original called Camelot that was dropping at the same time

Nobody was going crazy for Westworld before the premiere. Same for True Detective season 1. I'm sorry, but I'm going to put my faith behind the channel that has been producing the best television out for two decades, breh.
