People talking about MCz and lyricism...Jay has had legendary street battles with legendary rappers..not no song shyt..we talking new york walk up and battle a nicca type shyt.
Then the dude goes and damn near freestyle whole albums and gives you hyper lyricism with no pen.

Angie Martinez Recalls Jay Coming To The Station After Ether

“We sat there and hand-counted the votes until the winner was clear—sixty percent of our listeners chose “Ether” over “Super Ugly.” As much as it irritated me to hear the venom toward Jay, I agreed that “Ether” was the better of the two records. I’m literally getting ready to announce the winner when I look into the hallway of the station and see Jay Z walking into my studio. “And the winner is ‘Ether.’” I had to deliver Jay that blow while he was standing right there.
To say he was uncomfortable is an understatement.

I couldn’t really figure out why he’d agreed to be interviewed in this moment. But evidently he had been under pressure. Like I said, a lot of people felt he had gone too far. Even his mother felt that way. She was the one who suggested that he apologize for getting a woman and a child involved by even mentioning them.

I can see him sitting there like it was yesterday—defeated. I had never seen him like that before. He’s somebody who’s always so big and confident. And I hated to see him diwn. This is a friend, and I was part of the machinery that brought him to this point.

After the interview, we walked outside the studio to talk alone. “Yo,” I said. “Are we okay?”
“Of course. I don’t blame you for this,” he said. “This was just something that you kind of got sucked into. I’m clear. It’s cool.” I wasn’t sure if it really was, but I hoped so.”

You're fukking lying.

cause if you go back and play it, you know every joint ON that thing.

Thats the problem.

Y'all claim to hate these Hov albums but y'all know ALL the words.

Nas be having entire segments of albums his supposed stans have never even heard :laff:
Magna Carta was a terrible album. Jay had zero good verses and the production was trash. I haven't heard that since 2013.

He never did never will.

In terms of rap. Raw talent and lyrics, Nas has few equals. Jay is cool but Nas is just another level. He has too many examples of superb imagery, creative schemes and just raw raps. Maybachs and Beyoncé? Yea Jay wins. But when we talking about raps? Lyrics? Songs? Bars? Nas is just better. They still making books and classes off of illmatic.

Why y'all take up for Nas so much when he clearly makes worse songs?

At some point I gotta ask if y'all are masochists or something. Whats to gain from listening to lack luster production and presentation?
We could ask you the same thing. Jay has so many terrible songs.

Nah. Jay has had a meh career too me. For as much as people praise him he has maybe 3 great albums. Before this latest good album he went 10+ years without a great album

Pre Black album he was very inconsistent.

I wouldn't say he was any more or less consistent than Nas. But he was far from perfect during that stretch. People didn't start to really nitpick Jay's work until Kingdom Come. Whereas with Nas people tend to remember his misses and even use his best work against him. Song for song, I Am and Vol. 1 (both good albums) are fairly similar as far as the highs and lows.
