I think, just as with everything else these days, it was when chasing the bag became the most important thing. The execs don't care about artists working on their craft anymore, or even building them for albums. It's all about the singles now, and most singles have always been simplistic and easily digestible for the masses. If that's what's popular, then that's what controls the narrative.
