Was playing NBA Street vol 2 (When it first was released) and asked my friend "Why the cavaliers redesign their logo?"

My friends: "Because they're about to get LeBron James"

Me: !?!?!? (I wasn't fully in depth into sports just yet at that time)

It was sometime during his junior year, because I vividly remember the talk about "16-year old kid from Ohio". I remember the SI cover, not sure if it was before or after then. But I was on 7th grade during Bron's junior year, so I'm confident saying it was that year...

Didn't care that much, but because I liked basketball, you couldn't miss him. He increasingly got more coverage in magazines, at some point ESPN started television his high school games. Does anyone else remember the frenzy about where he'd go to college? It was always assumed he'd just go pro but colleges were jumping at him like crazy. Also when did the Hummer controversy happen? I also remember controversies about him getting paid as a teenager...

The Hummer shyt was from the beginning of 03 b/c it was a "birthday present" from his mom but the Ohio hs governing body was like :childplease:. The other controversy was getting a couple throwback jerseys for free. That happened not too long after the Hummer.

Cover of SI

He’s slightly older than me, so I was def intrigued by fact a young dude was supposed to be the next “great one” and he was probably the 1st one I paid attention to

Watches that Oak Hill game with my dad. And my dad thought he was overhyped based off that game lol

I was a big Kobe guy, but started to gravitate towards being a LeBron fan cause we were closer in age

I first heard about him early in his Senior year when the hype was ramping up. Decided to watch when his game was televised on ESPN or ESPN2. I didn't care about his athleticism because we had seen these super athletic busts before. It was his passing ability that had me take notice thinking the hype might be legit on him.
Same.

He's a year ahead of me, so all the brehs at my school were watching ESPN.

He was just different. Freaky athlete but he played like a pro damn near. He wasn't just some high usage player jacking up all the shots and stat padding. Watching him drop 20 against Sacramento in his first NBA game and looking like he belonged...that really confirmed it.

I can only imagine the problems he would have caused if he went to Duke, tOSU, Kansas etc.

For those of us old enough to remember the NBA before him…

Summer of 02 I had a copy of a Scholastic magazine and they had like a page or so devoted to noteworthy people. They mentioned something about some high school player that was so good he could’ve went to The NBA at the age of 15 or 16. If my memory serves me correct this was before ESPN started broadcasting those St Vincent games in the fall. It sounded like craziest shyt you’d ever hear in life but for some reason I just rolled with it

Then I finally saw him play :russ:

First time I heard of LeBron
