Was it when Hollinger was hired by Memphis? Of course people were using analytics way before then, but I feel like that hire gave validity to the community. Just asking out of curiosity to see when everyone else thinks it started. We are definitely in the analytics era now. I have no problem with analytics, but I do think shyt has gone a little too far. Listen to an NBA podcast and it’s lilely a bunch of nerds talking about real + -, PER, and True Shooting and shyt.

I still don’t know that the fukk PER or that other shyt is and I don’t care about it.

Just give me players who fit in my system and ones who won’t choke out the coach and I’m good
Aw man it matters.
Analytics doesn't mean you don't also use your gut but it gives you a model to consider for a second perspective.
If the rockets win this year it will be the ultimate validation.

Would looking at stats and player type just be considered analytics instead of all that goofy shyt?

I’m 29 man i grew up without all that I’d rather use the eye test.

Like if I was the GM of the Hawks, I’d go after players to fit the system. I wouldn’t need analytics to find bigs who can shoot the 3, a penetrating PG & 3&D wings. Plus I’d sit with em and figure out their personality to see if their a team first, unselfish person. Don’t need numbers for that.

The game changed man. All these new age GM’s are definitely using analytics in some way. Some more than others, but I assume all would be using it, as the should. But I guess the balance is in how much.

I’d argue between 2010-12. A big turning point I recall was Boston in the 2012 playoffs deciding to entirely scrap the strategy of prioritizing offensive rebounds to get back on defense to defend the fast break. The following year both them and Miami went all in on playing small.

When the spurs starting abusing the corner 3 cause for some reason nobody guarded it...

When the spurs just straight up stopped even trying to get offensive rebounds cause they realized teams score the highest % of their points something like 8 seconds or less into the shot clock...

Still remember Pop "I don't care if anybody on my team ever gets an offensive rebound again GET BACK ON DEFENSE ":stopitslime:

Every team uses some form of analytics now.

You don’t want to use numbers, but how are you going to know if a player is a 3 point shooter without checking his shooting numbers? How are you going to determine if he’s a good defender without checking the numbers of players against him and the teams defensive numbers while he’s on the floor?

You just gonna watch thousands of hours of film on 10+ players when you have other GM obligations to attend to as well?

No, that’s not realistic, the numbers paint a clear picture of what happens out there to supplement a scouting report. You can see different play types through the numbers and then verify through film.

I see a lot of people talk about how they hate analytics and eye test is way better, then they follow that up with some dumb shyt that shows how they don’t actually even know what it is that they’re seeing out there. Can’t name a single set that these NBA teams are running. And constantly shyt on players that play well within a team concept cause they don’t score because there’s no recognition of the game other than scoring and on ball defense.

Not saying you’re “that guy” but I see this archetype play out frequently

All I know is I'm tired of hearing about which players stat line "has never been done before in NBA history" every night. :beli:

_____________ is the first player in history to score 37 points....

Grab 11 rebounds......

Collect 4 steals.....

And receive a flagrant 2 in a double overtime game.

They are really like that. I hate when it they go " he is the first player to have 35 points,10 boards,8 assist,1 steal,2 blocks in 5 years"

Analytics have been around for a minute dawg:

But it wasn't until LeBron joined the Heat that it really became prominent. That's when things really took off.
