I saw an interesting twitter thread about this the other day

Here is the full report
SAGE Journals: Your gateway to world-class research journals

Thanks for this.

I used to believe that the nostalgic feelings for socialism were unique to ex-Yugoslavia, considering the later wars and ethnic problems.
Now I have a Czech colleague and they seem to have a similar feeling despite being the model country for transition to capitalism. He complained about increased poverty and income inequality.

college and med school definitely need to be cheaper. But I'm guessing we need to expand med school size too. And hospital internship and residency programs.

But all that only matters if we're producing enough qualified people to get there in the first place. Are high schools even putting out enough science-qualified students ready for a pre-med degree?

While I think that can affect the spending to a degree, it ain't like Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Utah/North Dakota/South Dakota out there running their state health care systems with any degree of concern for the poor either, and they ain't got no Black people.
I think they are. Sometimes folks med school dreams get derailed due to other obstacles. Making it free removes a major hurdle to those that qualify.

As long as you had a steady supply to replace, it didn’t matter.

Which is why most right-wing governments want to limit abortion. Steady supply for low-paying jobs, army and votes (low-education ensures those kids will vote how you tell them to) and, of course, consumers. It has nothing to do with religion or "morals".

My girl went through a very similar recent episode in Canada and her experience was very different. My late Aunt also had a very different experience with the NHS while being similarly screened. Both their wait times were more similar to the ones described by the Twitter user.

This anecdote isnt really reflective of how it would be in a country like the U.S.. I say this as a proponent of single payer here and everywhere.

Both had to wait weeks for referrals despite fairly serious symptoms.

Im not a health care expert by any means so I dont want to overstate my anecdotes, but I know wait times are a major issue in both Canada and the United Kingdom. Perhaps an indication that both countries needs to invest more in their health care systems, but its a complicated beast with rapidly aging populations.

The main failure/success of the American healthcare system is the insistence of the capitalistic enterprise to ensure healthcare for those who produce labor for the owners of capital.

Americans do not seem to believe in the concept of the social good. There are social programs but a sizable contingent do not believe in them because they believe they’re for slackers and wastemen.

America as political system has forgotten the concept of the public good.
