Only 6 Rappers in the History of the Genre have gone Diamond

MC HAMMER
BIGGIE
2 PAC
OUTKAST
EMINEM

It's a very elite group that's now etched in history since nobody is moving Diamond units in Hip Hop Again. "Hard Knock Life" was Jay's closet shot but he didn't have blockbuster #1 single to take him to the top.

9x Platinum:

Tupac - All Eyes On Me
Will Smith - Big Willie Styles
Nelly - Country Grammer
L-boggie - Miseducation

Those are the ones up to bat.
Em and Hammer are the only ones that actually past 10 milli, everyone else gets the diamond plaque by moving 5 million+ units as a double album.

Jay Z has never been close to Diamond. Going Diamond isn't a simple task. It's one of those things that happen out of the blue. Several #1 singles, classic albums etc. don't even really matter. It's pretty much a matter of timing and everything aligning. The most recent examples are Usher (2004) and Adele (2012). Both had the luxury of timing, a story, hit records, and acclaim.

Disc 1 - 5 Million
Disc 2 - 5 Million

A Double Album still sells 10 Million disc. Also back in the day Double albums did cost well over 24 bucks. You make it like it's easy to sell a Double album. It's way harder to sell a double than a single album.

Damn... I thought Jay-Z's numbers were better than that...

But how the hell does eminem sell more than 80 million copies worldwide and Jay-Z 30 million or suttin' like that and Jay-Z is still richer?

Talk about bein' ya own boss and workin for yaself....

Everyone has to remember. Jay don't have a lot of "POP" hits. His albums appealed mostly to urban audiences yet he's been consistently going double Platinum since 98.

I'm not saying it's still not impressive, it's worth more than a single disc pushing that much obviously.. but Em and Hammer moving that much off a single disc is A LOT more impressive than the others named. Literally twice as much people even if they aren't spending as much.

Never. IDK how guys like Eminem and DMX can go diamond but Hov can't.

Don't think X went diamond, but his first three CDs sold pop superstar status numbers...

Jay never was as big as 2pac, Biggie, DMX and Eminem were in their prime...

They had this iconic phases where they were just everywhere and everybody was buyin they shyt up...

Jigga has consistency tho... Not a case we can argue if compared to BIG and Pac cause they passed away too early and at the top... But DMX is nowhere to be found now and hasnt been relevant since THE GREAT DEPRESSION, and well Eminem is a different case... He's worldwide known and legendary.

I think what jay has done is unique and a once in a lifetime achievement... He's built a loyal fanbase from the ground up puttin' consistent music out for over 15 years and I think he is the blueprint to follow for any rapper who wants a long run at the top in the game....

True but Jay did go 5x Platinum with "HKL" and he has a record breaking 7 MULTI-PLATNUM rap albums. 15 Platinum albums. Jay Z is the most consistent seller in Hip Hop History. His Fanbase has been consistent all the way through pretty much. He averages Double Platinum for each album.

whats a better career

15 albums in 17yrs totaling = i will round up to 45mil(:russ: he hasnt sold that many albums but lets just "say" hes sold 45mil

or

6 albums over - 14yrs totaling 100mil

this consistency talk is a smokescreen for stans to cover up for him not being able to sell like PAC and EM... jay has more albums than both and couldnt even reach half their sales and jay has had a longer career than both

oh but hes the most consistent of all time :shaq2: he has consistently sold half of what em and pac albums sell/sold for 17yrs strait
