But no matter how you define it, I imagine it has almost zero correlation to his greatness on the court.
If you’re talking about whether an athlete resonates with the broader public, that’s a style or personality thing. Iverson and Kobe resonated on levels that far exceeded their actual careers. I mean even Tim Tebow remained a large figure years after his peak at Florida or his brief time in Denver, for obvious reasons.
I don’t think being part of the culture or relevant to the average person in retirement says much. Charles Barkley, even as great as he was, looms a hell of a lot larger than other players who were greater. I guess I could even say that about Kenny Smith.
