When you think about how Biggie and Jay-Z have that gift of not writing rhymes it is amazing

if it’s 100% true...then it’s truly genius level shyt and I don’t throw around that term loosely especially in contemporary music...but to cultivate the rhymes he does @ the level he does in the time frame he does and to be able to “catalog” all of it w/o ever applying it to pen and paper is incredible and even describing it as such feels like an understatement

I remember hearing Wayne didn't write:jbhmm:

As far as Jay is concerned I remember seeing in a documentary Jay used to memorize the dictionary as a kid so it's possible especially dude been rapping forever dude just got better at it. Same with BIG dude just got better

Wayne “doesn’t write” but the way he does it is go in the booth, spot 4 bars, think of some more, punch in 4 more bars and so on. I’m sure he did write some songs or at least came up with a loose concept or something but his style is very different to BIG and Jay, that loose free association type style.

Pretty sure Biggie got that from Jay, I remember a producer in a Biggie documentary saying it.

If Biggie wrote “nikkaz Bleed” without writing then that shyt is impressive.

And I never found Wayne’s claim to not writing impressive because he literally just rambles in his song and doesn’t stay on topic.

Punch in Wayne is different but as I stated Jay mom used to make him read the dictionary plus he been rapping professionally since his days with Jaz. Dude just got better. Same with BIG dude used to rap on the corners in BK off the dome that gave dude his own way to come up with verses.

The Set
Krs One was the first to claim to do this. He's also a staunch advocate of taking pen to pad.

It's nothing really impressive because jamaican reggae artist been doing it for the longest.

Peter Tosh, Bob Marley. ...... the list goes on.
Come on, those artists don't even compare to Biggie, and Jay-Z. I was just listening "Reasonable Doubt", Jayz's lyrics are so complex, biggies too! They tell stories in a rhyme, then say it to a beat on rhythm. That is some genius type shyt, Very different from singers.

I believe they really did it,.because they both were hustlers,.and rhyming since young. If you start rapping from 8-10 years old, and you do it all the time it becomes a habit. If you hustling outside, you just sitting there bored. Jay don't smoke, and you would be a fool to drink while hustling, so making rhymes in his head would be easy to do after a while.

Jay said he would start with one line, then repeat it 2-3x, then he would add another sentence to that, then repeats all the lines in his head until he remembers the whole song. I don't know how biggie did it

I think I get what you’re saying but phrasing it like that might have folks taking it the wrong way...I do agree tho that artists like biggie and jay had more complex lyrics/wordplay/rhyme schemes than the singers mentioned

I'm always surprised that people are surprised by this

Those of us who stopped using paper are simply skipping the step of physically writing

For me its more about the fluidity of the bars while repeating them aloud (or whispering them to yourself)

It allows for micro changes to be made with each pass. Different words or syllables dropped in or out on the fly

Whole lines being moved around as you start to solidify it

If I was recording something I wrote the same day I might jot it down right before I go say it just to keep shyt straight but I would have it perfect and be able to say the whole thing before I touch a pen

If it's something I have plenty of time on I might not ever write it down before recording it.

I try to eventually write everything in my rhyme book, but its really more of an archive
