I've been in IT like 14 years and I'm still a midlevel Systems Admin. I've been scrapping by on the things I learned back in 2008. It still has provided me a good 6 figure life. I would be making 160k if I wouldve gotten really good at one of the popular systems or apps but to be honest i was content with this midlevel career, until the price of everything went up. I took this new job in DC that's over my head in hopes to learn it and then demand more , bcuz u need it here. Or be able to be marketable in areas outside of DC.

Are you guys cool with where you at in your career or are you trying to move up?

Been a photographer in the news for about 12 years.. been in the industry for 20. I work in a city that I like and I’m making enough money to where I can just focus on my job and not worry about how I’m going to pay my bills. The younger folks treat me like I’m OG status.. I’m definitely not complaining these days :myman:

10 years in I'm a SWE and I'm running the overemployed hustle right now. High performing at my first job and flying right under the radar in my second one. Gonna go for a third job this time next year. I don't even care at all about performing well at it. Just trying to do well enough to get a severance and then run it back with another company. Will do this for the next 5 years and retire. Or maybe keep my first job because I actually like the work. Idk yet

Honestly I need to be working outside or working with my hands, but I'm not tryna be a superintendent. I'm bored as shyt:unimpressed:
For some reason as I’m getting older, I’m getting this strong urge to learn manual work like carpentry.

Been a Software Quality Tester for 3 years. Need to move on to automation, possibly programming although I don’t like that shyt

Been in tech 10 years now and I'm still an engineer making great money thanks to working in FAANG for 8 of those 10 years. Been asked and thought about going into management multiple times but then I realize that I would be trading everything I love about the job for what. The money ain't an incentive like in traditional companies cause tech companies smartened up and realized you just get a bunch of bad managers if everyone has to go into management just to make more money. Then, you have to work your way up to actual leadership where people's idea of management = power/decision making actually exists. Middle management is just like boot camp. If you survive you can usually thrive but nothing is guaranteed cause all it takes is for a few of your direct reports to not like you and it's a wrap :francis:

Also I didn't want to go into management as an actual minority cause then you get asked to attend all the recruiting events (which I already help with) and get paraded around even though you're just 1 of a 1,000 managers, when at my company, I wouldn't even be directly involved with hiring decisions as a manager :stopitslime:

I'm starting to feel anxious though cause I don't know what's next for me and I'm on my longest tenure at my current company so we'll see but I'm very blessed to not be stressed at all and can stay put for a while if I want :ahh:

Been in my role for about a year. I'm shifting towards devops. Then maybe DBA and then eventually Data science. Everything starts off fun, then becomes dreadful once you settle in. Im going to keep moving around and developing skills as i go along.

Both full time? I've been looking into picking up a cloud engineering position to add onto my current role, but shyt might be too much

Southern California…
8 years in as a claim adjuster , was going for a supervisor position back in 2017, but my dad got diagnosed with lung cancer so I ended up moving to our Business Insurance department handling business for truckers because it made it easy to go to doctors appointments with him and any emergencies

Since he passed 6 months ago, it’s time to focus on getting into a small supervisor role
