About to finish my first year in a Ph.D. program for Industrial Organizational Psychology. Honestly I could’ve stopped at my masters and started making money but i chose to continue bettering my research and statistical skills and setting myself up for more opportunities.

If i want to get a job straight out of the program I need to improve my programming/coding skills so thats where my research is heading.

Respect.

I wanted to get into IO, have my BA in Psych but couldn't get past all in the stats shyt it would require. HRM was the path of least resistance for me. Props for going through it and then some. :obama:

I have junior roles in Cloud DevOps as a civvie and in Threat Hunting for the Military.

I make great money in DevOps but i have a greater affinity for Threat Hunting and security as a whole.

So next year i wanna make the jump outta Software Development and Automation into Security.

6 years in advertising/marketing, currently working at a black ad agency as a senior strategist. I basically receive briefs from clients (mainly retail) on all the campaign info for what they want to accomplish, and I do market research, put together a strategy and plan for how to execute the campaign. Used to be more on the execution side, pulling levers and actually running the ads.

Next move for me will be supervisor/associate director and then director (if I stay in advertising). If I decide to go back to marketing (which is moreso on the brand side so think working at Nike vs. an ad agency) I would need to make that switch soon.

Happy with my choice tho. hit me if you want any advice on the industry

Can't you make more money with less work in Cloud DevOps? Cybersecurity people normally get treated like trash in the private sector.

Underwriting Consultant.

Spent 10 years with my old company but topped out at like $87k. They had a pension AND 401k plus great benefits (nice cafeteria, gym, cell phone discounts etc) plus my boss was flexible. Like I could text her Monday morning and be like "ain't working today" and it was cool.

Got full-time WFH when I was there once COVID started but realized I'd lose WFH if I got promoted from Senior to Consultant or Manager....they want Consultants and up to be in the office to help train the newer people since newer people gotta come in most days.

Applied for a new gig making over $100k that is pure telecommute no matter what. More money, less work. Old job had more paths up the ladder but it wasn't worth it. New manager starting salary is like $99k on the low end. Way too much bullshyt to get paid that amount in middle mgmt.

They counteroffered and it was STILL less than the new gig. Bonus is a little better at the old company and they told me with the bonus it would basically equal out. My boss ALWAYS made a point of saying "your bonus is a privilege and is not guaranteed." When she told me the salary/bonus offer, I told her "my bonus is a privilege and is not guaranteed...therefore I can't give it any consideration when comparing Job Offer A vs. Job Offer B."

I finally left teaching behind for a new career in AI/ML. I didn't initially apply for the job; they recruited me out of the blue. It's entry-level, but the pay and benefits are far better, and there's a lot more potential for growth and advancement. It's been almost 2 months, and I'm enjoying it so far. The work is interesting, I get to work from home, and I have peace of mind not having to deal with students or other teachers. I'm also currently taking an online certification for UX Design, so hopefully it's something I can utilize as I become more acquainted with the organization.

Been at my job since 2004 and I love it. So much freedom.
The money could be better; I could literally double my salary by getting a new job somewhere else, but man this freedom is a hell of a drug and I don't really need more money so I'm staying put.

HR Breh for a social media app that is currently going thru an acquisition by Tesla-Lord.

Been in this game for almost 20 years (I'm old), but i'm making the most I've ever made in my career. Hoping to pull in $400K depending on how this stock goes.

Or I could be laid off in 6 months, who really knows.

To answer the OP question: To go further in my career is going to take more of a leadership role. There is also an HR cert (or 2) I can get just for the rubber stamp, but i've been procrastinating on that for too long.

Can you do some consulting or start your own side business to supplement your income?

I have my Ph.D. in Psychology. I have a private practice with a small case load of clients that I do therapy with. I predominantly do workshops, trainings and focused programming. I help schools, institutions, non-profits build communities of support. I do trainings and PD's on the neurobiological underpinnings of trauma and how it impacts thoughts and behaviors on a biological level and not on a "strength level. I love what I do. The freedom is great and the pay. Iget time to see my kids, wife, and family I like- priceless.

I want to get more into the corporate world though so I have increased my social media presence and have become more active in speaking engagements and keynotes-such as TEDx, conferences et.
