Snitching is when two individuals are involved in a crime, one gets away, and the other one rats out his partner. It's not a myth. It's the original definition. The 'myth' of snitching is that snitching is a regular citizen reporting a crime.

The definition of a snitch is someone who got caught and implicates someone else. An old lady who tells on you aint a snitch, she's a concerned citizen. You can't be a snitch unless you were involved in the crime.

That itself is the myth...perpetuated by sucka ass nikkas that want to alleviate the shame of themselves being a snitch in some form or fashion, so they try to play with the definition of the word.
If you took part in contributing to the arrest & prosecution of another...you're a snitch. Point. Blank. Period. No two ways around it. And this is how it's universally regarded in the streets.

Snitching is telling on somebody, whether it be a person you committed a crime with or not, in order to get a lesser sentence. Snitching doesn't even really apply to a "normal citizen" because only dudes thats in the street will be put in a position to snitch. If somebody gets shot in front of your house and you call the police, how the fukk is that snitching?
The origin of snitching (aka informing), at least where black people are concerned, goes back to slavery. Snitching was bad because the punishment for having someone tell on you (for whatever) was unjustified, what with the massa raping and killing on a mere whim. So instead of informing, the slave-folk decided that it was better to solve shyt internally rather than tell on each other to the authorities (who'd blow shyt outta proportion always).
This has followed back people through all of history after that. The definition of snitching rightfully evolves when black people can't really rely on each other for safety due to criminals only being loyal to other criminals (see children dying as collateral for gang activity). Therefore; there's the civilians (who are expected to snitch to the authorities for protection unless threatened) and there's the nikkas in the game (who just by virtue of being part of the game are supposed to not count on the authorities for help anymore and solve shyt internally).
So yeah, it ain't a myth. It's just that shyt evolved 'cause dealers and killers don't really give a fukk about the innocent in the community like that. So if you doing dirt, demand that the rules be followed by your peers and contemporary opponents...but don't expect loyalty from the outside people who may get caught up without asking for it.
