If we were talking in person I'd gladly name some I believe to be of similar/superior quality.

But I ain't tryna get crucified on here so :yeshrug:

Exactly this. Mixtapes aren't really constrained by the demands and expectations of record labels, so the artists who release them are allowed more freedom and you essentially get to watch them practice.

I don't know man.

Albums usually are a direct result of someone attempting to reach a larger audience through old white label exes who don't give the artist all their creative control most times.

I say mixtapes definitely count being their own bodies of work.

:myman: Yep

as much as i liked MM2/MM3 at the time, i can't go back to them like that now..nor do i feel the need.
i'm the same way with Lupe..i respect the work he puts into his lyrics but i never feel like going back to his music like that.

another thing that always bugged me about Budden was when when he put extra emphasis on a word at the end of the bar.
i get he was trying add a bit more feeling into it but it always sounded forced and was jarring to me.

Is there a mixtape on the level of Illmatic? Paid in Full? Or the Chronic?
Mixtapes, in theory, are amazing, but the mixtape/album hybrid of late hasn't produced a truly legendary piece of work, unless I'm missing something.

:comeon:

theres barely any albums on the level of those joints.

the mixtape/album hybrids of today generally arent as good as albums from the past because the rappers arent as good. its that simple. you gotta compare those mixtapes to the major label releases OF TODAY. and the mixtapes are almost always better.

the funny thing is, if illmatic came out today, IT WOULD BE A MIXTAPE. you killed your own argument there.

I made a Top 250 maybe a couple of years ago and I think Budden was around 111 or something like that IIRC. I'd have to remake one though to get an accurate picture now.

:salute:

i have an incomplete top 200. budden lands right around where you have em.

i see i gotta get back on my list grind.

Outside of the top 25 or so I personally think ranking is really arbitrary. What exactly differentiates the 50th and the 55th rapper on the list? At that point lists are entirely based on taste and musical preference as opposed to any sort of objectivity.

speak for yourself breh.

I hear you on that. What I'm asking is what's the Illmatic of mixtapes? Aren't their five or so mixtapes that are generally considered the best of the bunch?

the problem is, youre comparing different eras. and all eras arent created equally. there arent any nas' or rakims anymore. and when they were around, mixtape albums werent being done like that.

illmatic would be a mixtape in 2014.

also, makaveli's "7 day theory" - an all-time top 10 rap album in my book, is really a mixtape album. thats the best "album" from the general consensus' goat.

I'm not sure why Illmatic would be a mixtape today, or how Makaveli was a mixtape - but that's irrelevant to the question I'm asking.
Regardless of how things have changed from era to era (and they definitely have) - what are the five best mixtapes of the last ten years? General consensus.

One of my 15 favorite but he's probably closer to 30 from an objective standpoint (taking into account his lacking album catalog).

thread wouldve had alot more voting if there was a "not top 100" option.

thread is platinum with just 38 votes.

because music like illmatic is relegated to mixtapes now. "oh him? thats underground rap".

makaveli was intended to be a mixtape. artwork was done & everything. they decided to release it as an album after pac died. thats why the sound & mixing is the way it is.

there can never be a general consensus for mixtapes. theyre too widespread and not fully distributed. alot of people on here have never even seen a physical mixtape.

I would say 31-50 range. he's a dope lyricist and has nice flows, but there is a certain "corny" factor that kills it for me. plus all his public addiction/girl drama stuff is a real turnoff. i dont think any rapper in "love and hip-hop" will ever be in top 10 of that alone

I'm not sure what that would have to do with anything though. Name your top 20 right now and I guarantee for at least 13 of them I can name some clown shyt they did that was even more embarrassing than being on that show.

A lot of my top 20 never did any cornball stuff, sorry lol the slaughterhouse interlude where he's mumbling high on vicodin or percasette or whatever? cmon... I will give you this tho, a lot of my top 20 rappers were from a time the internet/twitter/instagram/reality shows wasn't big or didnt exist. i'll agree that if that stuff was around in the mid 90's, they would get caught doing some clown ass things too.
