there were other rappers besides the run dmc & the beastie boys that were around back then & beforehand breh.

run dmc weren't considered king lyricists or anything. beastie boys didn't even write a lot of their stuff.

I think what he's saying is that they represent the old style of rhyming while Rakim/Kane/G Rap brought about the new wave of having more dense lyrics

A lot of people in the rap game didn't write their own music to be honest. At least not a majority of it. Then again back in the 80's/90's a lot of acts were acts and not just someone saying they were a great rapper.

what I'm saying is, they didn't shift the game like people think. they get way too much credit.

there were plenty of guys before them.

people seem to think everybody was rapping like run dmc before rakim came out.

I co-sign this. Lupe has the punchlines, flow, and story telling down to a science. Don't get me started on the metaphors and entendres. Plus i actually learn things from his music. Which makes it hard for me to listen to a lot of people cause he's so good.

Him and ye made it cool for a lot of these new acts to be themselves.
