Besides myself and some of my homies?

Andreas Hale, Noz, and DEHH.

Andreas is an OG of the music journalist game and one of the great black writers about music.

Noz is the realist white dude writing about music. Came from the belly of the beast (Spin, Pitchfork) and now does his own thing with no politics. His taste is rather trap focused now but I respect him moreso for general writings on rap.

DEHH are the best. I love their passion. It's like a debate amongst friends we all know. I feel like I could walk into their reviews and fit right in.

I couldn't tell you where to find a single music critic.

They serve no purpose

That's not true at all. In fact, critics are straight up the most important people in upholding standards and giving context to the music. It blows my mind when people say critics don't matter. I can understand someone being skeptical of a critic in actuality, but in principle, critics are on your side and super necessary.

Is it really a coincidence that hip hop made its most celebrated music at the height of hip hop journalism?

This post did nothing to convince me

I listen to music that I like and the music I don't like I do not listen to

What purpose does a critic serve me? I don't care how they value music in the least bit

DEHH is basically a handfull of nikkas from the coli with a camera :heh:

That's why I fukk with them, because agree or disagree I take them about as serious as I take the majority of people here.

I already explained what purpose a critic serves you. They make you a more informed listener. You don't like being informed?

Critics absolutely make you more informed. That's their job and why critics have existed in societies for thousands of years.

But that's OK. If you choose to not be informed then that's on you. But for those who wish to be informed they serve a massive purpose.

Informed about what exactly?

the music. The parts that make up music and how it all comes together, whether well or not. Where that music stands in comparison to forefathers like it, the social context past and present that make the music what it is, etc. A lot of shyt.

Breh, music has been around since the dawn of time. Has inspired nations to go to war, coming of age ceremonies, etc. It's how we express the human existence. The idea that music isn't worth analyzing is hilarious to me.

the belly of the empire
DEHH, and sources similar to them.

Besides that, hip-hop has always functioned its consensus in of itself; by the people for the people. Hip-hop doesn't need white publications to know which albums or rappers are important and significant to its history.
