I'm not talking about the usual knee-jerk pseudo-conservative contrarians when it comes to race issues. I'm thinking more along the lines of @Listen, @HHR, @Absolut @the white hip hop thief @Big Mel etc.

I. Do you think Riley Cooper should be punished? By The league? By his team?
II. Do you find the term "CAC" offensive? Would you equate it to "n1gger?"
III. Do you avoid race discussions on The Coli in general? Do you think discussions fail to rise a level worthy of engaging?
IV. Do you agree with the consensus among black posters that there's a clear difference between "nikka" and "n1gger" or do you think that's a convenient rationalization?
V. Do you feel sympathetic to the shyttiness of racism blacks face in this country in general, but less sympathetic when you read posts about race on The Coli?

I'm genuinely curious about your opinions as far as all those questions go...
I. Should get fined by both team/league should be suspended at least a game
II. No, the only place I hear the term CAC is online, and know most of those brehs wouldn't call me a cracka ass cracka to my face. Not comparable to hard R.
III. No. Depends on who's posting but most race threads on here about shyt that's one white person being racist.
IV. Yes
V Yes--I live in Chicago the largest segregated city in the US. No, conversation about is always necessary.

I think Cooper deserves somethin, however he said it outside the work place, on his personal time, so in my mind its hard to gauge the harshness he should receive. The real punishment for him has come already: Every potential employeer and employee in his workspace now knows hes a racist.

CAC bothered me more than I cared to let on, mainly because it read like it was typed with real vitrol behind it, and if I inserted any other derogatory word in its place, like what Riley said for example, it would garner threats of violence from many of the people who posted it, and regardless of the historical differnces, it didnt "feel" fair to have to accept it knowing that I dont feel the same way about another race that some of them apparently feel about me.

However, I cant get down with white people that follow that point down to" if they can say it, why cant i?" Because all that says to me is"boy, that dude must REALLY want to call someone a ******".

I used to engage in the racial stuff, but not as much now. They tend to go nowhere or resort to someone hitting me with a pacspit smiley and calling me a cac because i dont agree with them. I've learned some hard truths over the years though, and certain points of views presented have probably had more truths to them than I cared to realize. I'm a contrarian by nature, so opinionated talk thats skewed heavily one-way tends to bring out the "yeah, buts" by nature, regardless of how strongly I feel about it.

I think that I know very little of what blacks should or could do with the n word. I dont like hearing white people say it eitherway, and who am I to understand how they use it themselves. It doesnt look very flattering to me when they use it tbh.

Ive come to the sad realization that i dont really know what makes someone truly racist anymore.

It used to be simple to me; You thought a person was less than you because of the color of their skin.

Now its like" how do I classify my dad?" He actively built long lasting friendships with blacks throughout his life, had them to our house for dinner, played on sports leagues with them, friends for 30 years with some. Yet I have heard him more than once use the word in a derogatory way to generalize blacks on larger scales. He seems racist, but he has zero problems being around blacks and has never talked badly behind the backs of the ones he knows. So what does that make him? "Racist with benifits?"

If he was truly racist, why would he continue to respect and stay friends with so many black people over his lifetime? Its shyt like this that reminds me how fukked up race is.

I've heard more random racist comments than I care to admit from white people from all walks of life. I used to want to excuse them, like i know this person, and their a good person, i know they dont REALLY feel that way. And its easy to shoot for the low hanging fruit when your mad at someone, and go for that Staples "that was easy" button by calling someone a slur.....but does that mean you REALLY feel that way about an entire group of people???

At the end of the day, I sympayhize with both sides:Younger whites who dont want to be heald accountable for the actions of other white people before their time, and the blacks who grow upin households with relatives who remember the names of the white people who should.

White people have a hard time with equality. Equality to you feels like losing something to them.....even when they WANT equality. Even good people on both sides get caught up looking foolish is this racial shyt.

  1. Yes, he should be punished. By the league and the team.
  2. I find the term "cac" somewhat offensive, especially if it's used in a way to generalize all white people. But I don't get heated over it. It's definitely not as foul as "******." It was created on the coli , it has no history.
  3. I avoid them for the most part. It's not so much as the "worthiness" of the discussion, but rather, what difference would my cac opinion make?
  4. I agree that there's a difference. It's really weird to think about how "nikka" as a term of endearment came to be, and how strongly it persists despite its increasing divisiveness. But it exists, and it's clearly not the same as "******." It's a social construct, so it is what people make it.
  5. Posts on the coli do not change the sympathy I have for the uphill battle it is to be black in America. I don't know what it's like to always be second-guessing other people's motives just because of my skin color. I imagine it would have a profound effect on my perspective. I think the strong-minded are able to overcome initial feelings of outrage and maintain a positive outlook, and those that aren't as strong-minded are more susceptible to their own anger.

@sm0ke

So, you are saying that blacks that bring up and are outraged by racism are weak-minded? :rudy:

I. Do you think Riley Cooper should be punished? By The league? By his team?

Definitely by the team. I know he was forced to pay an "undisclosed" fine and "encouraged" to seek counseling. By the league? Hard to say. I think a two game suspension would have been appropriate.

I see a lot of stupid comparisons here to Michael Vick and such. You have to remember that saying that word, while repulsive, is not illegal. What Michael Vick did was illegal. What Plaxico did, inasmuch as he illegally possessed that gun, was illegal. I'm not going to argue their actual sentences, because it's a well known fact that black convicts get harsher sentences than white counterparts. I just think that the severity of the punishment ought to be based on whether the punishable activity is a crime or not.

II. Do you find the term "CAC" offensive? Would you equate it to "n1gger?"

No one ever pulled me over for being a CAC.

Besides, it only exists on this message board.

III. Do you avoid race discussions on The Coli in general? Do you think discussions fail to rise a level worthy of engaging?

With a few exceptions, I generally avoid them.

And no, I do not think the majority rise to a level worthy of engaging. On the Coli, it's different. People get emboldened by anonymity, so they like to troll and vent their spleen, white people included. I get it. If we're just going to say outrageous shyt about white people for kicks, then that's cool. But it doesn't qualify as a discussion about race at that point. More like self-satire.

IV. Do you agree with the consensus among black posters that there's a clear difference between "nikka" and "n1gger" or do you think that's a convenient rationalization?

Convenient rationalization. I think saying the word in any permutation should be looked down upon, regardless of who says it. I understand the difference in enunciation, but at the end of the day, the two are not separable.

The sad part of it is that white people always like to complain like, "Well if you didn't want us to say it, you shouldn't have represented yourself with that word in rap music, blah blah blah." But black people never ASKED for white people to co-opt rap in the first place, so that's bullshyt. But rap aside, the word itself stems from deep-seeded ongoing disrespect. The only time a word like that has ever lost "power" was because it become outdated and replaced (guinea), or because the ethnic group in question has been wiped out. My personal view is that if you want your community to be respected, you should refer to people in the community with terms of mutual endearment.

But whatever. I don't speak for anyone black.

V. Do you feel sympathetic to the shyttiness of racism blacks face in this country in general, but less sympathetic when you read posts about race on The Coli?

I'm an immigrant, and grew up around mostly black folks for a spell. So yes, of course.

On the Coli, it's different. Like I said, people get emboldened by anonymity, so they like to troll. I'd like to think that most of the opinions expressed on the website are not the same as the opinions actually held by the posters. But that's just what I'd like to think.

The league cannot suspend Riley Cooper as long as they are maintaining that there's nothing wrong with the "Redskins" name? :manny: the media keeps on saying that rap music makes it okay to say "nig*a" but riley cooper didn't say "nig*a", dude said "Nigg*r"? I have never heard a black person called another black person nigg*r

Yeah, but in that same post you quoted I mentioned that the difference between the two words was a "convenient rationalization."

i know. It would still be wrong for him to say it and he would still have gotten in trouble for it. But he said nigg*r in anger towards a security guard because of his race.
