You can’t rely on them…point is, where do you stand? Are you willing to fight? I know who I am and what kind of world I believe in. I don’t think many people really ask that kind of question.
We are so far removed from war that even 9-11 seems like a healed wound from the past. The war in ukraine is seen from the safety of our computer screens, seeing an image both sides are desperate to convey. That all changes when infrastructure is being disrupted, when coordinated gangs of ethnonationalists begin a protracted war. They can’t win outright and they know it, and they may be stupid enough to try when figures in local and federal government abet you.
I mean, when tensions flared between north and south during the civil war, there were signs. Westward expansion was happening at an unprecedented rate as manifest destiny began to embed deeper in the American identity. Legislation was drafted with the purpose of keeping slavery off limits, consecrating the idea of states rights as a divine right. The GOP has relied on the southern strategy and fukking over the common man for so long they’ve finally got true believers in their midst.
