The year 3030
All Nas did was be the first guy to say you’re a Stan on a diss record. Cam’Ron made the diss song to Stan Spit over the Stan instrumental as well. Everybody knew what Stan was after the song dropped. It was one of the most globally successful singles of all-time. We all knew Stan was an obsessive fan. It was dope that Nas used that line because EVERYBODY knew what he meant immediately after hearing it. Eminem gave the definition by creating the song and naming the protagonist Stan :heh:
the stan spit diss ain't the same

Eminem. Just based off of how much larger his audience was at the time.
his fans weren't using it like that

Is this even a question. Mfs aint start using that as a verb until Nas.

Em created it and Nas made it a verb. They deserve equal credit.
I really feel like I'm in a bizzaro world reading these kind of post. The song made it a verb, Nas was just the first to use it in a song, but it was already being used as such before Ether. Y'all couldn't have been a part of the culture back then with these takes.

Stan(the song) really went over y'all heads. That's crazy to me. Em didn't randomly decide to name him that, it was on purpose, a play on the word fan. There was the story told in the song to apply the definition to the term to describe rabid fans. Which is why Nas used it in Ether as a result.

I don't know why y'all keep saying no one was calling anyone a Stan prior to 2000 when they were, I know me and my homies were right after the song came out and also on AllHipHop forums. Y'all nikkas must be young, because this take is wrong. Em coined Stan and gave it, it's entire meaning in the song. Nas just used a term Em created.

no you didnt

All Hip hop forums? That's far from being a location. I never heard anyone say it as a verb when talking hip hop until after Nas. The culture wasn't exclusive to AHH. Nobody was saying it commonly until after Nas.

Bro, Stan was released an entire year before Nas used the term in Ether. Heads were using Stan to describe dikkriders on SOHH before Nas :mjlol:

Maybe on the net. There was an entire culture that wasn't on the net when Stan dropped that was using it like that. I was lurking in 00, and don't remember it until after Ether. I never heard anybody use it in any other form of media or conversation until after Nas.

SOHH truly became the Nas Stan’s that they are today in part due to him using the line about Jay-Z being a Stan after SOHH popularized it. There’s your random fact of the day. I don’t make threads here but if I did it would be about the origins of Thecoli.com’s obsession with Nas :russ:
