Jordan, Magic, Bird and all these consensus greatest players of all time choose Kobe. I'm not going to argue with them like I know what it takes and I see more than they do.
We'll just ignore for the fact that most of what you're thinking about was said before Lebron won back-to-back championships with a couple of the greatest seasons ever. Or that Kobe's legacy is already written, while Lebron's is still in progress.
WTF should we think that what these guys claim to believe is relevant? Every one of those guys is competative as hell and going to be thinking about themselves when they make that pick.
Jordan will never choose anyone other than Kobe, because Kobe is the perfect guy for Jordan to rep - he spent his whole career trying to mimic Jordan in every way, yet clearly failed to ever match Jordan in any way. There isn't a better possible guy to try to claim as the best of his era, because it just makes you look that much better.
And Magic is a hard-core Laker, so you know he's not picking anyone else. And no one is ever going to think that Kobe was a better Laker than Magic.
Bird is getting himself passed up as the greatest small forward ever, so you know he hot. You think he's going to say, "Lebron is a better small forward than I ever was"?
Magic and Jordan are two of the top-5 greatest players ever, and Bird is top-10. They'll keep repping their little brother who will never threaten their own legacy all the way to their graves. But when it comes to honest public legacy evaluation, why should I suddenly think that Jordan, Magic, and Bird are especially competent or believable?
