I'm looking to break 100k in my next move but I need a few back-up skills so I can do some side consulting. That is the wave of the future.
What are some recommended stand alone IT skills a tech savvy brother can pick-up to earn some cash on the side?
You're right consulting is where the big money is. I have a friend who owns a company that cleared 20 mil last year doing network consulting and selling Cisco products.
Consulting is tough though. They guys who make the most money doing it are typically people with a mile long resume. They consult for the large scale enterprises. On a smaller scale (and im looking to get into this also) you could consult for local small businesses. Often times these owners have a good business mind but don't know how to use IT to optimize the business. This could include setting up a website, site optimization. Using PC terminals to improve the business, etc. I think thats a good place to start for someone who has been in their given IT field for less than 10 years.

I'm thinking about going into IT...I'm trying to advance..how do I break into it so I can get this money?
There isn't a quick way to make big money in this game, anyone who says there is is lying. It started in 08 and didn't clear 6 figs for about 6 years. You need to have an idea of where you want to be long term before you start.
Young and not looking to get into management? You may be okay without a degree. You can get your certs start at a help desk and grind your way into a sys admin position. It's a faster way into short money but longer term you may get passed over for promotions.
Looking to make it to the executive level one day? You MUST have a degree (at least a bachelors), the certs aren't as important as networking with the right people are keeping yourself prepare for new opportunity.
In either case its important that you do things to make yourselves stand out. Work longer hours volunteer for things that will help show management you are ready for that next step, network with higher-ups and learn everything they are willing to teach you.
