Is this a result of companies being short on staff, and hiring anybody just to fill the spot?

Security is a easy job. They'll hire anyone as long as you don't have a felony. I did it ten years ago when I was in college. Most of the time when you hear about security guards getting killed or assaulted on the job is that they try to play hero.
