It's been around for a long time but Maad City was the song that brought a lot of attention to it. You could argue that social media played a role in bringing attention to it too but that was the song that I remember sparking the conversation about "beat switches."

Good question. Theres some Beastie Boys joints, DJ Premier that are notable. Even Benjamins with the BIG switch.

Honestly I think Drake turned it into a big trend in the early 2010s though.

Maybe not a full on beat switch but flow/energy switch up. Second half of the song way more turnt up.
