Like if you had to choose, who told the best stories in gaming what name comes to mind? Kojima? Eric Nylund? Marcin Blacha? Sam Lake?Susan O’Connor?

For me it's probably

Drew Karpyshyn or Sam Lake.

What about you?

no one. I know it's a very minority opinion, but I don't give a flying fukk about story in video games. Unstoppable cutscenes (especially those with QTE tied to them) drive me insane. Dog, I don't care. I like mechanics. What can we do in this MF. Most of these stories are so unbelievably boring and pale to what's readily available in the grand canon of literature. Once we get some games doing magical realism on the level of Sorrentino or Bolaño, I'll tap in. Until then, I'm mashing X

Surprise at no mention of Yoko Taro mention. I haven't dived into Drakengard, but both Replicant and Automata have fantastic stories. I do love how the style is different.
  • Replicant offering a more character focused narrative with NieR, Kaine and Emil.
  • Automata is a more theme focused narrative. The 2nd half of that really sets that in tone.
Also, Katsura Hashino deserves mention. He was the creator of Persona 3 and 4. Persona 3 literally saved Atlus from a brink of collapse. He was also the director of both Persona 5 and Metaphor. Also credited as the writer for both to note.
