This is 5 years old but no. I hear Little Brother and knew these cats was nice. Still don't understand what niqqas hear in Doom, and I don't believe it takes 20+ records to "get it".

I didn't explain myself properly..

They made music that the culture dosent want to hear unless it's delivered a certain way...

You can't compare them to Doom other than the fact that they are both independent/underground acts who were all considered back pack on hip hop no matter how different they are.

As for Doom all you need to do is listen to Madvillany to get the talent. Take away the character and the playfulness of it but real listen to the lyrics and way he puts together words. A song like Accordion is god tier lyricism.

It is though:gucci:

They didn’t get blackballed because of it. They just didn’t get major label push after that.

Take SV Trinity album.

Selfish blew up, so they got more looks.

Minstrel Show didn’t have a ‘Selfish’ song. So the majors put their wallets back in their pockets.

I forgot my reasoning tbh. That post was five years ago :russ:

LB was never gonna blow up in the traditional sense. But I think their internal issues fukked them up more than anything else. They were ahead of their time and had built a cult following and had a good live show. If they had stayed together just a few more years they woulda fit right in with that blog era and prolly looked at as the godfathers of that shyt. I can definitely see them collaborating with acts like Currensy and Wale around that time. They coulda been a new De La Soul where they just consistently dropped good music and stayed on the road

It's still mind boggling that they would sign to Atlantic and drop Minstrel Show. Why sign to a major and drop an album that is parodying everything in the mainstream and then be surprised when it didn't take off?

Then they also alienated themselves from everything Southern. Nobody was looking to Little Brother to make Snap, Crunk, or Trap records, but at the same time you can't really turn your nose up at your region all while pandering to an East Coast that was far removed from the sound Little Brother was on. Dropping something more along the lines of Get Back on Atlantic probably would've given them more reach.

I agree completely. I tried listening to doom for years and had his songs on burnt CDs trying to force myself to understand what I didn't hear the first time I didn't like him and never got it

They had a plan and they stuck to it. They were parodying/satarizing/criticizing mainstream Hip Hop on their FIRST album, which got them the deal. So in their minds I could see why they wouldn’t want to switch up. Also the Minstrel Show was critically acclaimed even though the label didn’t support it, if i’m not mistaken a journalist at The Source even quit in protest because they scored the album 4.5 Mics and Benzino changed it to a 4. So its not like they ostracized some huge portion of the rap community

Funny thing is this was the story of The Clipse too…It’s just GRINDIN was such a heavy swing but aside from that I never people playing their music in nyc and I’m pretty sure down south was the same

Many reasons why they didn't blow

1. The audience for the type of music wasn't big enough at the time + Atlantic records never knew how to market it.

2. Big Pooh was one of the worst rappers at the time when they were getting their deal. He's improved over time but you really only get one chance to make a first impression.

3. Do women feel them? I don't think so.

I'm a huge LB fan by the way but I understand why they occupy a space in the underground and won't become popular.

That isn't acquired taste, that's simply non-mainstream.

No, it is not. It's unnecessary hyperbole.
What's so funny? Name a song that lyrically is better than that.
Your hyperbole is funny.

Mos Def/Yasiin Bey gets it

Great for him. He must not value delivery and flow. And nah Doom isn't "being playful".
