I think it's a lot of reasons.

* Smart phones / Social media have helped make young people more impulsive, more reward-oriented, less able to deal with delayed gratification.

* There's been a turn in the country since Trump ran (partly even since Obama backlash) where a lot of people are more open about their racism and hate. You see far more openly angry people hating on entire groups in public than you used to, a complete erosion of social norms towards decency. Even if the hate existed before, you weren't supposed to show it. Teenagers pick up on that change and have a lot less self-control, so they get into a "well fukk you too then" mood and have less concerns about social norms themselves.

* Covid fukked up social skills development for some kids. In addition, there was a sort of "fukk authority" backlash across the board, you see more people speeding, more people going road rage, more people lashing out in lines or against regular workers. Everyone justifies their own antisocial behavior now because they "don't want to be controlled".

* Police have become even more hostile towards inner-city communities, either expressing open distain to BLM etc. or refusing to police at all, purposely allowing things to get worse.

* Guns are becoming even easier to access than they ever were.

the wildest 1s are always teens and young adults....you're physically grown but mentally not there. Your hormones are raging and you do not understand consequences like that.

plus its when alcohol and drugs get in the mix. you haven't built a tolerance and you're already p-brained. its a bad combo but it is what it is.

also you have no patience. at that age you want it all RIGHT NOW.

It seems like the crime across the country among teenagers is skyrocketing and I have no idea why. When I was a teen all I wanted to do is get my license and hang out with my friends. What happened? What's going on with the young people?
They're doing it to EAT!!
1) Communities where teenage unemployment is high tend to be violent. This is especailly true if they're poor and cant feed themselves
2) Fentanyl and the drug trade. Cartels are setting up show in black areas like Chicago and acting as the plug for these teens. These teens then fight each other over who gets to do business with these mexican cartels. Whoever wins gets to sell the fentanyl to junkies. This is why you tend to notice that the fentanyl crisis mostly affects states near chicago. Go on the map and look at states that are located between illinois and new york. You'll notice that they are ALL going through a fentanyl crisis. you'll also notice that chicago and new york have lots of black teens fighting over turf and who gets to sell the mexican's fentanyl.
> if you want to fix this you baiscally need to take the mexican fentanyl plug out of the question and/or employ those teenagers. I would have said "get rid of poverty" but we been trying to do that in America since forever.

Threads like these always like to default to the old "it's always been like that talking points" but I'm here to tell you, gen-x and my generation (millenials) are some of the woat parents, if you fall into them groups, you got kids and it don't apply to you don't take offense. But gen-x was the beginning of parents living their 2nd childhood and wanting to be perpetually fly. This came at the expense of their parenting.
I said this the other day and got cooked for it. This is mostly a black Gen X problem, especially the white and black mothers (asians and latinos trying to raise their kids right). No one wants to hear about it until these governors and mayors start doing that law and order talk. it's looking grim out here.

Money Crimes - aka dealing, scamming, stealing - keep up with the Jamal's and attract the females - same as it ever was

On the buy side - They want high end designer stuff. Like a Hermes Belt is like 5 bills. Not jeans, not a jacket, just the belt.

On the earn side - You got grown folks working at McDonald's.

The ones that steal won't work straight jobs. They want big money, fast and easy.

Violence Crimes - Boys been shooting each other since there were guns. Before guns it was knives. They shanking each other in London. That's testosterone, music, lack of a Good father, no economic opportunity. But that ain't really a Black issue, that's popping everywhere and in every culture. Societies have always had a problem with "young men".

The uptick? Stat wise, I don't know if it's an actual uptick compared to the 70s/80's/90s, or we hear about it more via social media. It might just be perception, as the world always been an evil place. I think it's much worse, but I watch a lot more news these days. And the news gets to me as well.

But in terms of motivation - online makes things a lot worse.
  • Beefs develop online, that would not have developed in real life.
  • Real Life beefs get amplifed online.
  • There's a whole culture of "chiraq" and "ny state of mind" along with the music.
I could not imagine this type of thing coming up

r/NYStateOfMind

Vice brought Chiraq to the general public in 2014. Not that Chicago ever been soft, but all the street stuff used to stay on the street.

Street rappers used to say stuff to other street rappers, and folks in the life, that if you was square, you wouldn't know about. There was always a hidden gossip level in hip hop and the street life, and those two didn't always cross paths.

Now we got Trap Geek and all these YT, Tiktok, and Chicago/NYC influencers that make the stuff, and if you listen to rap, the algorithm is gonna suggest all of this side drama and documentaries. The culture underneath Hip Hop is another thing to be dissected, analyzed, and monetized.

Places that are not the biggest of cities, are also getting on the map as well.

It probably is worse these days, and it's being made worse by the macro-factors of economics and racism, and the micro factors of poor parenting and cultural amplifiers.
The big factors are:
1) After the 2008 financial crash, most of the black wealth got wiped out. By 2019 other groups had recovered their lost wealth, black folks hadnt.
2) When black wealth dropped in 2008, CACs started gentrifying our areas and this is how the homelessness started to spike. This led to more black kids being raised on the streets or in precarious situations. Black poverty actually went up from 2010 to 2019 because of the cost of living sky rocketing and the fact that we lost most of our assets in 2008 (we couldnt benefit from the rise in home values from 2010 to 2019 because we lost most our homes in 2008 during the subprime mortage crisis)
3) Gen X were parenting these kids during the 2000s and early 2010s. Those were somewhat "stable" periods compared to today, so black Gen X went real soft on parenting. Gen X gotta be the worst parents to date. Millenial parents might be worse. I think Gen Z parents will be more right wing (especially among Cacs and Latinos). Just look at how racist and right wing Gen Z is?
4) Black teens fighting over who gets to do business with the mexican cartel. Especially in the fentanyl trade. A lot of these turf wars are over that. Especially in Chicago. Remember how El Chapo and his crew got caught in Chicago and it was revealed that the place was bsically a major hub for the cartel?

There is nothing new under the sun and in fact people are less violent and more civilized than anytime in human history. To deny this is just some

Any statistics there?
Co sign. The murder rate now or even a few years ago has no turned to the peak of the late 80s and early 90s. Are there some cities that has surprised their all-time peak? Yes but not most. We're just more quickly exposed to crime via the internet. NYC peaked with 2300 murders, not it's not even a quarter of that iirc. Calm down but I understand.

I'm 40 years old and I remember as a kid the adults asking the same questions. Ain't nothing more dangerous than bored youth who doesn't have an avenue to put all that energy.

unless we have a major cultural shifty, In 30 years this gen is going to be asking the same questions and so the cycle continues.
