Carmelo played in Denver for like ten straight years! That's B-More than just his rookie contract. How does Carmelo not count if that makes any sense or dollars?
Iverson and Billups were traded to Denver. Melo was drafted by Denver. No one cares about Ty Lawson.
Denver is not a prized destination. The altitude sucks and the owner (the Kroenkes) is notoriously cheap and doesn't give a damn about winning championships. They'd never build the kinda contender LeBron would want.

He extended his rookie deal. Even if he tested the market in 07 and signed an offer sheet he was Restricted and Denver was matching period.
