Why can't I enjoy 90's hip-hop?

18 years old.

I been making my way through Jay-Z discography. I like Reasonable Doubt but vol 1, 2, and 3 are hella boring to me.

A lot of Wu Tang songs sound really boring to me.

They're just bars. There's no real melody. I'm sure if I printed out lyrics I'd appreciate it, but they don't sound fun to me. Fun songs to me are like Drake - 4PM in Calabasas, Kendrick Lamar - DNA, J.Cole - Neighbours, Vince Staples - Big Fish, etc.

I like some 90's songs like Ice Cream and Atliens, but I can't listen to a full album cause it gets boring. 4:44 >>>>>>> any Jay-Z album for me. Is it really that hard to enjoy stuff before your time?

No disrespect, but that music wasn't meant for you.

I am 35, and even back then there was a certain demographic that thought Wu Tang and most East coast albums were "boring". They did like Nas albums (except they didn't like illmatic) and they liked Biggie, mace and puffy albums.

You're a mainstream dude that likes mainstream shyt.

Leave the gutter music for the appropriate people.

You can't enjoy it because you are 18.

You haven't lived enough to understand of appreciate it. Revisit it again at 25+.

2pac was 18 with the life of a 25 year old when he was 25 he lived the life of a 40 year old.

Lots of 90's artist sang about real adult shyt. I was just listening to this song by Lauryn Hill. shyt is timeless. It was deeper than the shallowness of a lot the songs you mentioned that were surface level deep. Many 90's artists lived their music. This song is a check point of why Lauryn never released another album.

This is bullshyt

nikkas were 18 listening to 45-50 year old blues artists at one point

Being able to relate to an artist helps, but its not the end all be all in appealing to someone sonically

Op is not AA.
"Neighbours"
"Fun songs"
You also have a cac/suburb/feminine qualification for what you listen to, due to the artists you grew up with all being plants.
It's like giving a kid raised on ramen a steak after he's been told steak is "lame".
You're not good enough for the music.

You're also not supposed to listen to the tracks and immediately understand all the bars, plus the lyrics are not as relevant to you and not a reflection of your surroundings I'm 22 and I understand how you feel cuz I can't fukk with 80s hip hop for the most part

It seems like OP is looking at the music that people hype up from the past instead of what his taste is.

You're not going to like the bulk of music from any period. But there's should always be something from the past that still sounds good today.

Whodini's Five Minutes of Funk was before my time but I love that song.

You gotta realize what you like in today's music, and see who was doing something similar back in the day.

I can respect you for being 18 and admitting you can't false love shyt you weren't around for. Don't ever feel like you gotta like something just because you think you are supposed to.

Late 90's/early 00's was my era. I'm proud, I loved it but I'm not shaming anybody too old or young to feel my era.

I'm 19 and I don't like 90's rap that much. It's like dudes just wanted to show how dope they were on the mic and too many people sounded similar...

With that being said, I've always liked pop music more than rap music and 80's pop>everything else imo:hubie:.

I was raised around Gucci Mane and Jeezy and southern hip hop, but I've always had an ear for good music...

To me, the 90's is severely lacking in depth because the true greats are the only one's that are brought up and referred to as classics. You never hear the 'floor' of 90's rap because it was just as bad as the worst shyt is today. Dude's just don't like to bring that up...

Like in West Coast rap. Dude's would say some of the corniest, most cringe-worthy shyt, but no one noticed because it was masked by a nice beat and the artist's cadence.

This is how Hip-Hop will die;

When it's relegated to dance music

In the day of Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc, we forget when Rap was the only way we could get our story out and explain what going on in our community

Even movies relied on Rap is speak on Black issues
