thats probably because you in the UK

american 17 year olds dont give no fukks

Could be but cos we've got drill and Uk rap here thats what most people listen to my age now. I think it's because I was exposed to it independently a lot earlier so kinda grew up with it. In my circle Nas gets as much play as Meek or Drake.

realistically because your gateway is basically the commercialized misappropiated idea of emcee'n as rap fused with rnb is gonna be your issue.
the genre of hiphop in the new school way of thought was about making the culture stand on its own, as a music statement.
while still using breaks, and the prohibitive tale using the vocal as an instrument.
the problem you are gonna have is you came up on a gateway built on making rap into misappropiated rnb and not cultural based hiphop.

just starting anywhere around 1996 for rap is a bad time because that started the dark years for rap quality and ushered in the manufactured commercial agenda to make rap into rnb via the change in radio.

your best bet is to start at the beginning of the new school revolution with criminal minded and learn of the progression of new school way of thought norms and mores.

or start at the beginning of the culture and the ol school way of thought and follow why and what caused the ol school way of thought to be phased out.
plus, why when the ol school way of thought ways are not squelched and kept in check.
it will bring about the overall ruin of hiphop culture.

by listening to exactly mid-nineties rap as your gateway.
you won't get what you supposed to be getting culturally and be confused.

this music has a culture behind it and it can not be misappropiated.
if it the culture is misappropiated.
the culture of hiphop, loses everything that made it what it was, to begin with.

18 years old.

I been making my way through Jay-Z discography. I like Reasonable Doubt but vol 1, 2, and 3 are hella boring to me.

A lot of Wu Tang songs sound really boring to me.

They're just bars. There's no real melody. I'm sure if I printed out lyrics I'd appreciate it, but they don't sound fun to me. Fun songs to me are like Drake - 4PM in Calabasas, Kendrick Lamar - DNA, J.Cole - Neighbours, Vince Staples - Big Fish, etc.

I like some 90's songs like Ice Cream and Atliens, but I can't listen to a full album cause it gets boring. 4:44 >>>>>>> any Jay-Z album for me. Is it really that hard to enjoy stuff before your time?

Because you're a fukking simpleton

You're only scratching the surface

Get some pharcyde, tribe called quest, De la soul, brand nubian, boot camp clik, gangstarr, epmd, etc etc in your life.

Jay has skills but his "art" is boring. he's been gassed up like crazy.

i've been saying this trap/mumble/melody shyt has to be a new genre. it's not consistent with Hip Hop at this point and half the artists (let alone the fans) even want be called rappers or MC's

that new shyt in the pop mainstream is basically trip hop and euro rnb that features bone style rhymes in technical execution because the rhyme writing is flawed and vocally has no tonality.
the more and more i listen to the commercial genre change it is all actual singers trying to make the r kelly collabs on a rap song verse.
not an actual real emcee...it is basically a what if of the force md's all over again, and recreates the impending doom for hiphop and rap that it did back then.
where rnb and disco was looking to re-assimilate hiphop back into their scene with no cultural based connection let over.
every new artist in a commercial aspect is a rnb artist .
who makes the r kelly double time bone rnb takes for verses.

which will always be remedial rhyme wise and on the sonic palette as it uses melody and autotune to cover up the technical deficiencies and lack of skill rhyme writing.
which in effect will make rap into rnb and not a part of hiphop at all.

I felt the same way when I first heard eastcoat music in high school.. I found it boring and the sound didn't have an energy.. years later I learned to like the lyrics and all.
