Helps someone? He's the reverse Kanye. Dude decided to show a complete range of artistic ability after starting out making music on a more "comprehensive" level. I think as long as Kendrick makes music that is impactful and helps someone, he shouldn't go back just because there's a crowd that wants more GKMC ish.
Another one of those "I liked you better when you weren't as famous or liked, please go back to that" thread
You don't need to be able to write music in order to have a vision for what your art sounds like. shyt, we might be witnessing Kendrick in the process of learning how to write music and play instruments. RZA made a similar translation in the last 90's.just cuz they show an outtake doesn't mean he's the creative force
ya he went from making typical 16 bar verses to writing music and instrumentals lol riiiiight
fukk outa here man. Dude has a team of people creating his sound. It's pretty telling that once he got with thundercat and crew, his sound changed profusely. He's not writing all those bridges and hooks, breakdowns, beat changes, etc, etc. Hell with the way rap is today I wouldn't be surprised if he had help writing his own verses. You don't need to be able to write music in order to have a vision for what your art sounds like. shyt, we might be witnessing Kendrick in the process of learning how to write music and play instruments. RZA made a similar translation in the last 90's.
Jim Morrison didn't write music but he was the driving creative force behind the doors.
Same applies to Kendrick.
They don't hate his message, they hate his style. They loved him when it was GKMC. Was that not an expression of himself? I see it both ways. People need to stop going with this "higher ground, moralist" route when discussing music the same way people need to let go of the "does it bang in the whip" mentality. As much as I like a lot of posters in the Booth, I feel like I am the only one who consistently does this. People switch up when it's an artist they love. I think it's entirely fair to dislike Kendrick's current style. The vast majority of people admit that it's harder to listen to than GKMC. Kendrick is the reason it's harder. Musically it is remarkable, but whenever you're trying to genre-bend like that the vocalist is very important. Kendrick's voice is harsh on a lot of these tracks and doesn't really bring them alive. Take King Kunta for example, I can see why people like it (I can see why people like anything) but someone with a smoother flow from the West Coast i.e. Snoop would've made it sound better.Because he's trying to make music that is more meaningful and ultimately an expression of himself. You dont have to like it if its not your style and lord knows there's plenty of generic fast food raps out there if you're more into that.
his music never been like everybody else tho, so that's bullshyt. Section 80 wasn't like nothin else at the time and gkmc wasn't either. U go so far away from your og sound and lose yourself sometimeIts pretty sad when a rapper does something different or unique and you have a bunch people saying "why can't you just rap and make songs like everybody else" you have 100 other rappers making turn up songs on trap beats and singing with autotune....
Why wouldn't you just listen to them?
I respect him for doing something different, I don't expect his next project to be like TPAB or unmastered but I expect him to do something different.....
I love Section 80, but damn he already made section 80 so I'm not really interested in him making the same CD again
sleeping on Tetsuo and Youth which was the real best album of 2015. Was both conscious, sounded amazing, Lupe spit insane bars. Lupe just doesn't have the media or label backing.
I thought tpab was horrible. Actually in an argument about it right now
I can't go with that. When you say someone perfected their sound, you're saying that you feel that it is when he perfected a certain style that suits him and which he makes his best music in. That can vary from person to person. It's why people like different eras of artists. As for K. Dot, people are not very articulate. What they're saying is that they don't feel this neo-Jazz, soul, spoken word, hip hop shyt he's doing. They feel like it's contrived like Doug's sister Judy. I'm a Kendrick fan, but I just don't enjoy listening to a lot of this shyt nor am I enamored with his rapid fire flow on every song while the underlying bars themselves are not that hard.yall hide behind words like "artsy" tryna use it as an insult just because you don't appreciate shyt about music outside of the little box you put yourselves ineither that or you've never made anything yourselves so you don't know how important it is to constantly challenge yourself with differemt styles and workflows. Why the hell would an artist want to make the same shyt they made 5 years ago?
n yall got the nerve to say that man "lost himself" what if this is the sound he's been chasing the entire time geniuses?
YALL decided for yourselves that "____ album was when he "perfected his sound" without anything to base it on, you set yourselves up for disappointment![]()
I'm all for artists taking chances, pushing the genre forward, etc, but I agree with the bolded just not necessarily that he is the "worst" part of the song although I get the idea behind your post. IMO, the album is very good sonically, but I can truly say I would've enjoyed TPAB just as much, if Kendrick wasn't on it at all....sonically. Although I don't still listen to this album, I would often find myself ignoring the voice changes, effects, etc to find the parts of the album that I do find enjoyable. I also understand that it is his lyrics, the interludes that bridge one song to the next, etc. that help in bringing the concept to life make him another necessary part of the equation to making this an album. For someone that can get past the things that I've mentioned or never had an issue with those things, as it seems that many don't, you might not find any issues with the album. On the whole it just doesn't work for meThey don't hate his message, they hate his style. They loved him when it was GKMC. Was that not an expression of himself? I see it both ways. People need to stop going with this "higher ground, moralist" route when discussing music the same way people need to let go of the "does it bang in the whip" mentality. Take "i", he is literally the worst part of the song. That 'everybody lack confident, everybody lack confident" part with his voice was awful.
