Why did BET cancel Rap City?

I thought a lot of people were complaining about Rap City being a bad influence on black youth and BET caved to the pressure. The black community is so much better now that Rap City is gone, right?

Nah, they shytted on Rap city because they pushed the hard headed street dudes with little artistic value in it. Rap City did more good than bad, though.

BET never set out to be a rap or music channel. That just happened to be the strongest performing programming when they were at their peak. After the Tip Drill video outrage and the backlash against BET Uncut they went in another direction with their programming. They tried to ramp up Rap City with new hosts and nobody liked em. Between that and YouTube popping off in 2005 the demand for videos on TV shrank. Viacom wiped out their music programming across all of their networks (except MTV Jams).

TLDR: Black chicks at Spellman, YouTube & Viacom killed BET.

They cancelled it a little after the basement. They went in a glossier direction so you had new cats come in and host but nothing really worked then it got the boot. But BET is a distant memory to me so fukk em. Ever since that "little brother is too intelligent for our audience" nonsense they been on my shyt list and I haven't watched since 04 or 05

^pretty much. i havent watched BET since 2005 or so. still dont know why ppl still watch it in 2014.
and even then BET wasnt all that. previous shows in the mid to late 90s was the REAL BET (planet groove with rachel, old midnight love, the show with donnie simpson where he was interviewing rnb artists etc.).

BET still started to go downhill once 106 and park came out in 2000 or so. and the nail in the coffin was around 2004-5 which was when i stopped watching completely.

As much as people can go on youtube and watch any video they want at anytime people like to have a pre planned selection & be surprised.

I used to love when BET would have rappers come on Saturday afternoons and have them choose their top 25 videos…..Even if it was a producer picking them usually we'd see gems that weren't regular rotation that you forgot about and you got an interview out of it.

Back when BET played videos I'd watch BET damn near all day…..There was a show that came on before rap city that aired videos, then rap city, then 106 and park and at night there'd be sit coms.

Then you had your Caribbean rhythms. It seems as tho now BET is content with showing old movies and re runs of older programs instead of developing their own series like they used to in the past.
