Rap CIty was crushed to assist in destroying hiphops popularity and further controlling the artform in the mainstream. Because executives dont understand the art its easy to slip certain guests between the cracks outside of whoever has an album coming out from a major label. Now, when you check for new artists you have less options in the media for finding new artists that arent designed for you. Thank you internet though. :dj2:

Mainstream black culture isn't currently strong enough to keep supporting wack wannabe so called modern R&B and turn up rap music.

Trust, Viacom will throw that show in the bushes soon....

nikkas will cry again saying we never can have shyt...

We did this, we don't respect the culture or arts and crafts.

...and we made millions and still don't own shyt...

Welcome to the new age.

Ratings would be fine today IMO. They need to bring it back. Change up the set, go on location to different cities, keep the freestyles, add battles, add a new host maybe even though I had not problem with Tigger. These dikkheads at BET gave up on that show too easily.

no. let the show rest man.

rap city stopped being rap city for a good few years before they finally took it off the air. and somehow mainstream hip-hop has gotten even worst since then. let it go.

Let's be honest.

Rap city was built and based around NY hip hop. You had to embody the actual foundations of what the hip hop culture was all about. You had to have some form of skill to even freestyle on spot.

Around 2005 was the age of the complete southern takeover. You didn't have to have any form of skills, just being a hustler or character was good enough.

Viacom saw that as easy money. They promote the south more than any other region even till this day. They helped dumb down a culture. Ours babies don't even know what the foundations of hip hop are. Are babies are lost.

Plus, it didn't help that ny was beefing with ny.

Y'all should be happy rap city is gone to be honest, the music since 2005 all the way up to now is so disrespectful to what the show was actually about.

Rip Rap Titty.

yea, the little brother fiasco was one of the writings on the wall, along with:

- back when purple haze was out, BET didnt let hell rell in the booth with cam........now think of all the other instances where this happened. think of all the popular new rappers at the time that were shut out of the mainstream. its no coincidence.

- and the best one of all.........when they refused to play de la soul's new stuff because "we dont break new artists".:laff::laff:

Well they do have Rap Fix on MTV Jams which I like. They should bring it to MTV2 or something. I do miss Top 25 and BET Now where they'd show videos for two hours in the Afternoon.

BET has not represented the culture of hip hop in years.

Modern day BET does not represent or even speak for the African American community.

BET speaks for Viacom.

An entire Saturday afternoon filled with the Top 25 countdown, Teen Summit, and then Rap City the Basement. shyt was piff. :to:

cant forget about BET Mad Sports. dope sports show. followed by the Mad Sports Top 10 Countdown where an athlete would countdown his all-time 10 favorite videos. and they usually didnt pick corny athletes to do the countdowns. they usually had athletes that knew their chit like rasheed wallace, chris webber, etc.

real talk tho, think about how much trouble you may have stayed out of back then. i can think of instances where chit happened after i went home to watch rap city.

As much as people can go on youtube and watch any video they want at anytime people like to have a pre planned selection & be surprised.

I used to love when BET would have rappers come on Saturday afternoons and have them choose their top 25 videos…..Even if it was a producer picking them usually we'd see gems that weren't regular rotation that you forgot about and you got an interview out of it.

Back when BET played videos I'd watch BET damn near all day…..There was a show that came on before rap city that aired videos, then rap city, then 106 and park and at night there'd be sit coms.

Then you had your Caribbean rhythms. It seems as tho now BET is content with showing old movies and re runs of older programs instead of developing their own series like they used to in the past.

GREAT POST. i cosign everything except for that last comment, because BET actually had way more original programming these days, not counting music shows.

but yea, you really nipped that youtubes chit in the bud. dudes in here acting like people didnt tape their favorite videos back in the day, and he still continue watching the shows regularly. its like you said, people still wanted the pre-planned selections & elements of surprise. and thats not even counting the interviews and such. rap city helped keep you up to speed on everything new in music, culture, fashion, etc. as much as i love youtubes, theres no cultural significance to that chit, and all it does is keep you in your own little world really. plus, theres a filling of fulfillment when you see artists that you like make it to the silver-screen, and continue progressing. as opposed to the internet where artists are pretty much avant-garde unless they have secret money behind them, which f*cks the internet chit up even worst.

Nah,cause parents don't care about children's entertainment anymore. They want their kids to watch prime time Love and Hip Hop and other ratchet shyt.

Thing is, Rap City got canned when the darkest rap era of all time came in (the one hit wonder era) around 2005 to 2010. Cat's dont even freestyle anymore and they are in the rap game for the short-term money and for the bytches.

meh. it was the dark age at the time, but rap right now is even darker.

dont get it twisted

It's a money thing, Rap City ratings were generally going in a downward trend in part due to the youtube era.

nah man. the youtubes argument is overrated. i like how homie broke it down a few posts ago.

also, lets be real; most rap city viewers werent even up on youtube like that back when rap city was still on the air. and the ones that were, mostly had chitty speed. alot of people were still using dial-up back ithen, myself included. lol. that chit was more of a hassle than anything. that chit was more of a school/public computer phenomenon at the time.

Nah, see the first three seasons of College Hill were the best ones. It wasn't scripted and you saw them actually on campus being a student. Remember "no draws"? It was typical drama back then if there was anything ever to argue or fight about. The original people who created on the first three seasons of college hill was replaced after Viacom bought it out. You can def point out their work because those seasons were quality. When they took that shyt to Chicago and the islands it became all about drama, race and homosexuality. shyt was scripted with nothing but actors. It never showed them doing anything on campus. The last season they made back in '08 or '09 when they had that dumb ass girl who never have a fukk about her African heritage, dude fukking the same girls in his bed without changing sheets and the flamboyant homosexual...I knew that this would be the last season.

And fukk Viacom and BET!

I remember when the had Charlie Murphy hosting the show called We Got to Do better with an racist image of a black cartoon in the logo! Yeah Viacom, you think that I wouldn't remember did you? Just because you asked google to take down any images or videos of that racist show will not stop people from remembering!

And fukk Being Mary Jane, teaching our daughter to be whores sleeping with married men.

shyts fukked up.

fukk Viacom and BET :pacspit:

THANK YOU.

the show went to chit after the 1st 2 or 3 seasons. before, it had the perfect mix of quality content & f*ckey. but eventually, it became all f*ckery and just another exploitive "reality" show about people who just-so-happened to be in college.

hell, before they would highlight a certain college. but in the later seasons, none of the cast members were even attending the same school.
