He played with Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart and Donte DiVicenzo at Villanova, and he’s clearly the best out of those four, yet he’s the only one who was a 2nd round pick. He was the National Player of the Year as well. Even Jevon Carter was picked right before him in the second round. Was this a case of NBA scouts valuing “potential” over results?

A lot of scouting is subjective and through that lens of subjectivity a person like Jalen Brunson falls through the cracks and a scout will look at his height and immediately cross him out as a fit to their team. This is totally disregarding the fact that Jalen has played winning basketball his whole life, second generation NBA player so is somewhat accustomed to the grind of being a player.

I used to look at Khalid El-Amin the same way because that chubby nikka just balled and won everywhere he was, till he got to the pros and had to sit on the bench.

The prototype is Tracy McGrady or Jayson Tatum. Damn near seven feet tall, can handle like a guard and can defend 1-5.

Jalen does not fit that mold.

If you look at the players that became college player of the year and subsequently a higher ranking star in the NBA. They were usually freshmen, sometimes sophomores. While the juniors and seniors not so much, more like solid role players.

So I wouldn’t put too much weight on that, probably size”discrimination”.

As we’ve seen it’s kinda hard to draft players when everyone has different number of years in college, international experience etc.
