Can you imagine how massive America would really be with all of Canada added to its original size? :picard:

Because Canada was a subject of the ruling World Power at the time?? We also did have a war with them and they ended up burning down the White House :hubie:

there was basically too much shyt going on at the time. plus it didn't make sense to go north and fight an organized nation on equal footing at best when you could just go west and claim whatever you find as you went.

russia essentially gave alaska away - and they were dumb as hell to do so as well

I think Brit and France were already there. Plus most of the US was involved with wars against Native Americans, African insurrections, or defending itself from Britain trying to reclaim the USA as a colony. By the time, things settled down mid-19th, Canada already established itself as sovereign.

We tried to invade during the American Revolution. It was largely a fiasco, and the citizenry was openly hostile towards the new American government.

We gave it another go during the War of 1812. The American military leadership was completely incompetent, the Canadians were still hostile, and we got our asses handed to us. By the time new, more competent leadership manifested itself e.g. Winfield Scott, Alexander Macomb, we were on the defensive.

IMO, the last opportunity for a serious invasion of Canada was during the US Civil War, where Confederate Agents and various malcontents were using it as a staging ground. This led the UK to massively increase their defensive posture in Canada i.e. forts and additional forces.

Note that we kept war plans for the invasion of Canada ready--just in case, you know.
