Pete Rock trashed It Was Written when it first dropped because he wasn’t featured on it and Nas didn’t speak to him for over ten years.
There was a rumor started by the internet that Pete Rock had slept with Carmen and that led to issues between them. Rock was asked about it in an interview with Allhiphop and Rock said “That never happened and Nas is dumb if he believes it. He hasn’t spoken to me in ten years. I don’t know that woman!”
They set aside whatever issues they had in 2011 because Pete Rock was supposed to be on the original version of Lost Tapes 2 that Nas was trying to put out before he dropped Life is Good. That song, The Art of It, ended up on the version we got in 2019 along with Queensbridge Politics.
In 2022 Pete Rock threatened to sue Nas over writer’s royalties for his hook on The World is Yours. Which made no sense as Sony still owns the Masters to Illmatic and would be responsible for paying any and all royalties to credited writers and producers. Nas threw a shot at him on Kings Disease 3 and Pete Rock crashed out over it on Instagram and threatened to delete his social media.
Pete Rock also threw shots at Hit-Boy’s production, basically calling it an “imitation” of the boom bap sound and that he and Premier could do better.
For Illmatic’s 30 year anniversary Nas gathered with all the album’s producers minus Pete Rock and took a celebratory picture. Rock claimed he was late to the photoshoot and that he and Nas had no issues.
Thats the current timeline regarding them.
