Why didn't Taker succeed as the top guy?

Because his original gimmick was literally that of being an undertaker. He was a freak who fought other freaks and spent many years doing terrible angles and slow terrible matches.

He didn't start to evolve and become interesting until the Attitude era, but by then there were younger stars doing bigger things.

Yep, Undertaker works much better as the challenger. Legitimized a bunch of guys in my eyes

Austin
Brock
HBK
Orton
Punk
Edge
Not to mentioned gave Kane a fukking career (entire gimmick plays off of the OG Taker) by proxy in a lot of ways. Yankem made it work and put in his time, but he definitely gave him a place on the card next to him. He also helped Show and some other monster heel get over in order to help out other talents.

Got damn legend. :mjcry:

Probably because Taker went part time soon after and Punk went to Raw. Still was a great feud for a young CM Punk

it doesn't work or vince couldn't figure out how to MAKE IT work.

this is the same guy that was main eventing within a year of his debut, and no one even batted an eye. everyone knew he deserved to be there.

not crazy to think that if you turn him baby he could be a big deal. :yeshrug:

as a kid I wanted so badly for him to get the title from Yoko...perhaps it would have worked in the 80's since he's closer to an ultimate warrior mystique type

but something stopped Vince from putting him in that spot...I remember like 20 heels came out to stop taker from beating Yoko...i was furious

I don't know though how Taker was seen by older heads probably too cartoonish? but as a kid I ate it up

Nah.. I don't jock anything on Vince's payroll... I'm just not one of the "I hate everything WWE but I watch every week" squad. There's shyt I like and shyt I don't. Hell, I haven't liked MOST of the last six months of WWE TV. Only thing is, I'm not writing essays about it, I LEGIT haven't been interested.

I didn't say AWA Hennig is not revered at all... I said not AS revered as Mr. Perfect. That's not to say he wasn't good then, but he was champ in a company that was on its last legs.

DiBiase could have stayed in UWF and gotten drafted over to Crockett in '87 and got treated the same way 85% of that roster did... but we don't know that because the only thing that is REAL and TRUE is that he became the Million Dollar Man and became a household name. What coulda/shoulda/woulda happened in wrestling is always a wild guess at best.

youre COMPLETELY missing the point.

and youre not stupid, so i know youre just playing dumb and trying to go off-topic. dibiase was poppin, hennig was made. what about mean mark? youre avoiding this like the plague.

who cares if a company is on its last legs? thats neither here nor there, especially considering that hennig quickly shot to the top of the wwf and handed Ls to hogan ERRLY.

btw, i wasnt talking about that when referring to your stanning.

19 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Shawn Michaels

The mid 1990s in WWE weren’t the greatest of times for the company. They really had a tough time replacing Hulk Hogan as a top draw. Top talent was leaving to WCW like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall to name a few. Not only that, but WCW was also red hot after starting Nitro in September 1995 and then doing the New World Order angle in the summer of 1996.

Who was the top guy in WWE in 1996? Shawn Michaels. He was the WWE Champion for most of the year, but he wasn’t a very good draw. The company lost a reported $6 million from May 1996 to April 1997, which was the time when Michaels was clearly on top. It wasn’t all his fault because Bret Hart was on a break for six months and they really had no other top stars other than Undertaker. However, as the champion a lot of the blame went on Michaels. The champion should get the credit when things go well and with that comes the blame when things go badly.

When WWE really started to grow as a company it was in early 1998 while Michaels was the heel champion facing off with Steve Austin. WrestleMania 14 was a huge success with Michaels dropping the WWE Title to Austin and it was boosted by the inclusion of Mike Tyson. The thing is, WWE grew even bigger after WrestleMania in 1998 with Austin as the clear top guy and they even surpassed WCW in the ratings after losing to them for nearly two full years.

There's a difference between being popular and moving the needle. Taker was popular, but he didn't move the needle like Hogan, Austin, or Cena did.
Ummmmm yeah, Taker is way more Everything > Cena
