the answer is probably because america is large enough, isolated enough, and powerful enough for its citizens to not have to be concerned about other countries. most other people have to know what's going on elsewhere, many countries are so small that traveling among them is like us traveling from california to texas.
also, our cultural exchange is overwhelmingly one sided. outside of BBC america, we dont really consume european media directly. if we get a show from europe, it will most likely get adapted into an american version, so many americans may not see the diversity of a city like london
i can believe americans didnt think there were many blacks there, but as far as people actually thinking there are no blacks there, i kinda wonder if those people were just trying to insult you, because every one i know knows there are black people all over europe
