I still say it all came from James Brown. I can still hear a little "Say it Loud I'm Black and I'm Proud" in go go, especially when they let the crowd chime in. Add Chuck Brown, a little jazz, and believe it or not, a little rock, then you got go go. Yes rock was sampled too, especially in the early 70's, when early members of Experience Unlimited use to practice next door to me, before they formed Experience Unlimited (EU). Compared to what I use to hear next door, go go did come along way. I'll attest to that.
How I know all this. The brother next door to us use to play in that band in his basement, although he was a little young...but he was big, strong, and athletic for his age. Man was he a bully, and could back it up...plus he had a large extended family. Not sure what made him a bully. Anyway, they use to use his basement for practice...I'm sure they were paying his parents a little something. This went on for a few summers, then they moved on, and left him behind. That pretty much ended his bass career. I use to say to myself, what are a bunch of thugs doing playing music like that...whatever it was. Anyway, he was the one that told me this information years later. At first I didn't believe him, until I began reading articles on the DC trio talking about how they started, and how they use to sampled rock. When I started reading articles like that, then remembered what my nextdoor neighbor told me, then remember what they were playing sounded like something worse than rock, it all made sense. Some of the members of the trio (Experience Unlimited, Rare Essence, and Trouble Funk) have passed on. Btw, they weren't really thugs. It was just that to us, anybody who associated with that family were either thugs, or cousins. Man that basement would be lit with marijuana.
Once they moved on, and started playing at the same places with Chuck, and finally started putting a rhythm to it, it was on, and people could dance to it.
Btw, I'm not saying go go started next door to me, but next door to me was one of the places they use to practice in their early beginnings.
I think I shared this before, but this is with a little more detail.
