why do people throw Kanye in their Top 5 with the likes of Nas, Jay, Pac, Big, etc....

I'm 24, and I 100% agree with your statement. Kanye's Late Registration was so inspirational in high school, one of the best Hip Hop albums in history. The Graduation album was also that for me, it came out in my senior year of HS, so it's kind of ironic for me. Great times to be a Kanye fan

Still don't put him in my Top 10 though :mjlol:

Me either man.

Hip Hop is one of the only cultures that's on some now shyt...in other genres the legends are respected and just cause artists are doin their thing now don't automatically put them over their past pioneers...it's their responsibility to go back and check the past shyt..see where shyt comes from etc...if u don't feel like u need to go back and check the older shyt..the classics..and all that comes with the culture u listen to...u have NO right to be talking about top 5 in the first place....cause u don't even have the knowledge of reference...stay out of grown folks conversations if that's the case...

It's definitely true that a lot of kids don't go back and look at the legends. That's a big reason why I don't even think about debating people that go "Just heard Cuban Linx. Overrated." Albums are a product of the culture at the time. If you weren't there when it came out, or certainly not 20 years later, and you hear it for the first time, you can have an opinion. But it's never going to hold as much weight as someone that was there.

I think it's indicative of the era we're in. You can't just like it without something being the greatest ever. Kids these days don't go back to history at all, so for them what they see on TV now, is their whole world
People can't just enjoy a great Hip Hop moment, and not think it has to be the Top 10 of all time

I enjoy Kanye cause he was a great moment in Hip Hop, and a great artist. But it doesn't mean he has to be a Top 10 rapper. People these days think great means greatest. They can't diverge the two. There was many Rappers in the 90s that isn't in my Top 10 of all time. Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest, Rass Kass, Lauryn Hill, LL Cool J, Big L, etc

It's either Michael Jordan or Kwame Brown with people. nikkas can't just appreciate a Tony Parker

Best hip hop ARTIST of all time. Never been that good of a rapper but he's always come off charismatic and entertaining. Undeniable game changer. Set just as much (maybe even more) trends in culture than anyone else in a top 5. :yeshrug:

Here's the thing - I respect that people are gonna have their favorites based on what era they grew up on. But if you come at me as a 'hip hop fan', and you haven't done your homework, I can't take you seriously.

I'm 30. The very first rap album I remember loving as a kid was "The Funky Headhunter". Because my dad played it. When I started listening to rap on my own, the first album that really put me into hip hop was "Harlem World". This was 1997. I LOVED that album.

Just because you grew up in an era doesn't make that era the best. My era is technically 97-2004. But having done my homework, my favorite era is 93-2000. Particularly 93-97.

If you consider yourself a hip hop fan, you owe it to yourself to go back and listen to what the genre has offered. Really take it in and understand each era. I have OGs who put me on to stuff pre-1985. I believe I've heard most major recordings from 1980 onwards. Or at least have an idea of why Run DMC were so influential, and how they were different from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

The great thing about hip hop is that it gets surprisingly easy to figure out who was really dope and who was not so dope. The classics jump out at you. Nobody hears "Top Billin" and thinks: 'yeah, this record sucks'. Or The Bridge. Or Freaks Come Out At Night. whatever.

and the only reason why 80s rappers get short-changed (though the 80s blended into the 90s and OGs I know consider the 80s/90s to be very closely linked) is because their careers were shorter. and the great 90s rappers who came after them really did their homework, so it became hard for them to compete. Can you really say Nas is iller than KRS-One? No. But Nas has had a longer career than KRS, had access to more amazing producers, and thus has made more bangers. If we were to compile a list of superb tracks, Nas would have more. That doesn't take anything away from KRS; he dropped amazing music in his time.

Lol at Kanye being in the top 5 when there's rappers like....

2 Pac
Nas
KRS-One
Rakim
Jay Z
Biggie
Scarface

Etc lol..
One of the early posts are right cause tbh I don't see myself listening to krs one or rakim.. Even more so scarface..

Outdated raps to me I don't find appealing.
