The album just wasn't all that good. It's not the worst album I ever heard but not the greatest either. The album has like 18 songs and Nas is only on like 5 of them, that says it all.

Plenty of explanations.

1.)It is too much like a mixtape. Sure there are skits but it still just feels like a collection of songs. They had so much potential with the organized crime theme and Phone Tap is really the only song that even really capitalizes off of that. It should've been an audio movie for lack of better description, where every track has something to do with the last and it continually gets stronger until it's finale, but it's just a collection of songs from Nas, Nature, Mega, Fox and AZ with features that weren't bad lyrically, but they don't help the album in any way, they're just there.

2.)Definition of all style no substance. It's not their fault though, Dr.Dre and Steve Stoute were supposed to be a heavyweights and ended up misdirecting it and being a shytty executive producers. The imagery of the Firm was powerful and the assembly of those 5 would incite fear in anybody but the Wu-Tang Clan but it doesn't deliver. When you put these 5 together something spectacular is supposed to be born from it, but there's not one amazing thing on the album even though they were capable of it, it's just average. It ends up being something that looked better on paper, they were good together on It Was Written but a whole album together exposes things previously unnoticeable.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
:hhh: fukk outta here, back in the day critics said this was a failure...how?...Nature still one of the most underrated rappers of all time ...and phone tap is one of the greatest tracks ever made

5 out of 24 tracks is what we deeming classic now :francis:

if 90% of the album ain't GREAT, it shouldn't even be considered close to classic... and still that 90% ain't automatic if 3-4 are straight garbage
