Jazzy Jeff was really the star of the group at first. DJs were equal to or more prominent than rappers in some cases and Philly had the best performance DJs in that era. Jazzy Jeff and Cash Money> ANYBODY from that era.

Record label packaged Will in ways that distorted the truth but made him easier to market. There was room for diversity in hip hop back then. You could have a tour with 5 completely different acts, who each brought their fan base to the show.

His rap career is mostly forgettable now.

Will is as hip-hop as they come and brought hip-hop and Philly into y'all living rooms in the early 90s. His earl;y albums are friendly but he was still spittin. Brand New Funk, Summertime will forever be embedded in hip-hop, he prob had the first track dedicated to his hustling/top goon. And Philly LOVES Will. From nerds to the street dudes, he gets the utmost respect he can do anything he wants in Philly.

He did, but most 80s rappers didn't. It def wasn't enough to really differentiate him from me saying he was no more different than Will. Just subject matter is the real difference.

It has been revealed that in 1989 Will Smith was arrested over an alleged vicious assault which took place in Philadelphia.

According to reports, Smith - who at the time of the arrest was 20 - was involved in an argument which resulted in a man almost losing sight in one eye.

The charges against the 44-year-old actor, which were later dismissed, included aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

The National Enquirer claim that the assault on record promoter William Hendricks took place in the days following on from Smith receiving the first rap Grammy alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The initial story which was published in the National Enquirer, alleges that a police report states Smith asked his bodyguard Charles Alston to 'attack' Hendricks.

Hendricks was left needing six stitches after he fractured his left eye orbit during the attack.

A source told the magazine: 'Will had to spend a night in the cell at the West Philadelphia police station with other inmates waking him up all night long and asking for his autograph.

'It was the worst night of his life. He wants to forget it ever happened.'

Y'all thinking about this too hard...he was never hated. If he was hated, his movies and shows wouldn't have hit. Hell, his songs from 86-90 still wouldn't get burn on urban radio across the country.

Couple of things that would have helped his image...

• Should have never changed his rap name to Will Smith.
• Should have still fukked with Jeff as a duo when he came back out. His production was so fukking soft when he came back out and counter the hip-hop sound at the time. Not saying he needed the Hitmen producing for him, but his tracks sounded like the same shyt Backstreet boys would sing over.
• Never made singles for his movies. Although, i disagree about him being a plant...it's obvious he wasn't, but the whole thing screamed some corporate marketing scheme, just inauthentic all-around. Hip-hop, although has been many times over has proven to be smoke and mirrors, the fans, the people who move the culture forward always has been about authenticity. At least the appearance of it.
