North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
The answer is simple brehs. Most rappers in the 80's and 90's failed to build their brand. It can't be just about the music. LL isn't just a rapper it's a brand. Building a brand takes time as well as luck and of course you have to have the talent to stay relavent and current with the times. Snoop Dogg isn't a rapper it's a brand. The same with Nas and Jay-Z.

In simple terms it has to be more than just the music. A lot of artists today recognize that which will lead to more rappers still remaining mainstream relavent into their 40's.

On and the genre didn't blow up until the 80's

it's too much on the other side these days tho, cats are "building a brand" but forgetting the classic music bit.

Even in rock you have legendary bands that end up doing smaller gigs as time goes on. Really its who's preserving themselves and have the right team behind them to push them with touring after they are out of the mainstream. Rap has only kinda had that happen with 90s artists or 80s artists who were under the Def Jam brand it seems.

But it happens across genres.

True true, but neither do you hear about the early R&B pioneers.

actually yes.

that's a rough comparison because r&b wasn't referred to as "r&b" until like that late '60s/70s.

I think it's because rap tends to be a genre fans grow out of when they get older.

like who?

casual fans who really had no connection to the genre to begin with?

besides, how many people who grew up on the beatles & rolling stones are still checking for the new groups of today?

hip hop progresses... the other genres are static.

We went from this

to this

why do nikkaz not honor Atari anymore? nikkaz got PS3

meh.

more people would rather listen to sugar hill.

lets be reality.

Are you serious? Who can't immediately tell the difference between rock from different periods? Do the Beatles sound like The Rolling Stones? Does Queen sound like Alice in Chains?

the black cat is my crown...
why do hip hop fans keep comparing multi-platinum/diamond selling rock artists who sold out big arenas in their primes to rappers that barely went platinum a few times... bon jovi & rakim? are you serious... i ain't waste the time to look up the sales, but one of bon jovi albums probably outsold rakim's entire discography... let's be reality for a minute, please....

btw, another thing that harms hip hop's viability is the moronic "sales don't matter" nonsense.... true, when debating who is the most skilled and creative or even most enjoyable to listen to, sales don't matter... sales also don't matter to the fan personally, as they see no profit from the sales... but in the grand scheme of things, of course sales matter... the purpose of putting out an album is to sell it... duh!

I wish we could get some classic hip hop stations around the nation. Every city has at least 2 classic rock stations but we are lucky to get 30 minutes of old hip hop. The station doesn't even have to play only 80s and 90s music, just make it so the song has to be 5 years old. That way the music stays in rotation.

Its also due to the fact that some of these old school nikkas be on some salty shyt. Like Melly Mel was comparing Pac to Hitler even though Pac was gonna put that old nikka in the One Nation Project.

Like for example when Nas dedicated a whole song to Rakim and Rakim got all salty about it. Like damn nikka, He did a whole song dedicated to you thus introducing you into a new generation of fans and you gonna still complain?? Thats why in a way the youth is like fukk these old nikkas
