Companies like money.

cuz console users let them

Cause gamers were fukking idiots last gen and we're like 'yeah, I'll pay for XBL cause it's way better than PSN' instead of calling Microsoft out on their bullshyt. Now, we're stuck with having to pay for online for every system as all the console companies would be idiots not to charge after the success of XBL

And that's really all there is to it.

Paid online for PS4 is exactly the same as free online for PS3 as far as service goes.

Might as well be considering a subscription hasn't made one iota of a difference :martin:
On PSN?

That's not true. The service offers a lot more now than it did at first.

And even then it was a huge investment for Sony to offer PSN. I don't blame them for trying to make money off of it:manny:

well me and everyone else who pay for that shyt couldn't even use it earlier considering it was down. Not to mention that it constantly goes down. Then you have the hacking scandal that happened a few years back. It sure runs like its supposed to be free. All I want to do is play a few games online with my friends. Thank gawd that I don't have to worry about that on the pc, so I'm at least good for most titles.

I saw this post on a random google search for this question from Gamespot forums:

Again, what rights? We're talking about two different kinds of markets here. One is an open market with many competitors, the other are closed and absolute monopolies. On the PC, you don't want to pay for full online, you just go elsewhere, or drag their name through so much mud it make everyone else look like saints until they backtrack. That's what happened to GFWL.

On the consoles, if you want to play full-featured online, you only have two choices; pay up or go f*** yourself. It's how it is, and short of MS and Sony losing their damn minds, that's not going to change, and in the internal cost-benefit analyses of many console players, it's a price worth paying.

What's not to understand?

Makes sense I think. PC is open. "PC" isn't a company. You don't get on "PC Online" or w/e.

On Sony and Microsoft consoles, you only deal with them since everything goes back to them.

I'm saying what value does it have for someone that just wants to play Madden? and people that aren't interested in the 'free' games?
I totally agree with your argument and see where you are coming from because the only game i play is 2k lol.

there's a lot of people like that. some people buy a console just to play COD, BF, or whatever. they're not interested in a bunch of 'free' games

there should at least be a cheaper option for just online play. but I think we all know the majority of people would probably take that option, and these companies would 'lose' a bunch of money

barebones?

what features do console online services have that Steam doesn't?
The most important as far as gameplay goes is much better security.

Things like party chat, hosting pictures/videos, avatars, more/better cloud save support. And I'm sure I'm missing something.:manny:

Steam has all that :heh:

every game has a "Community Hub" with forums, screenshots, videos, guides, reviews, news, and a workshop and/or marketplace if the game supports user content

Steam Community :: DOOM

two-factor authentication for your account and any trades

text/voice chat and group text/voice chat (aka party chat)

and cloud saves
