:yeshrug: All they are doing is increasing the comparative advantage of corporations. Thats perfectly fine in the laws of capitalism.

Its allowing corporations to maximize comparative advantage.

:stopitslime: It actually used to be called corruption but now its called lobbying...in many parts of the world people go to prison for the same

No free market proponent ever said having corporations buy influence over policy is a good or desirable thing..so its a big no in the laws of capitalism

:ohhh:what is really interesting is we see the very same patterns of corruption in socialist systems so maybe its just a human failing in general.

It's a mix of 1 and 2. He's a neoliberal through and through. Not because he's evil, but because he truly believes it's the best way forward for America. He also has a personal love for the Asian values exemplified by placed like Singapore. He truly believes that Asia is the future, which is why his administration made the pivot to Asia a priority. I don't think Obama has any sentimentality towards the American working class that is being gutted by policies like this. I personally think he believes they're too stupid to know that their way of life is unsustainable, so he's going to drag them into the future kicking and screaming. That's why there's a natural rift between old school leftists like Bernie who have an inherent distrust of the corporate class, and new school neoliberals like Obama who are more cosmopolitan and grew up in an era when that old school leftist ideology was no longer en vogue. The recent health care battle was a perfect proxy for that ideological rift. Bernie wants a big government approach, which is considered an embarrassing anachronism to new school neoliberals like Obama. They've accepted the primacy of the corporate class as a given, so they go with the flow, so to speak.

What's funny is that China, with its "One Belt, One Road" project, its massive investments in infrastructure and governmental approach to laying the foundation for growth is what America was doing 60 years ago. And that Eurasian integration that Russia and China are plotting is why you have TPP trying to stop that plus the US will never leave Afghanistan because it sits on the New Silk Road. Afghanistan is the US's gateway into Central Asia. If the US ever left, Beijing would EAT.

Absolutely - because you need to have that neoliberal outlook to feel comfortable with this move.

Now I will say, and hopefully I don't come off hypocritical here, that if TPP was introduced publicly as an extension of military diplomacy and not masked as sound economic policy, I would be all for it.

My rationale here is that if you introduce TPP as nothing more than a DoD program, then the onus is placed back on our economic leaders to make up for the disadvantages created in our local economy. However, with it being laid out as an economic platform, politicians can just write off all of the negative effects as the unforeseen consequences of free market capitalism. Business leaders that reside here in the US will just say, "blah blah blah competition in the global markets." The inevitable loss of blue collar jobs, which serve as a safety net for a vast majority of americans, will be welcomed by white collar professionals who feel blue collar workers are intellectually inferior.

The political elite on the left love the meritocracy myth.
I'm in full agreement.

Yet you're ignoring that any concession to these companies is literally Hitler.

:why: WTF does the fuhrer have to do with this??

You tell me. You're the one defending a race to the bottom.
WTH..did you just switch positions and create a straw man..between this and that hitler comment im questioning your sanity?

I bet everyone's pension is invested in those companies in some shape or form, so yes.
You have no way of knowing this ..second you are not the oligarchy dont act like wall street feeds you
In fact wall street siphons money out of the real economy..not the other way around

You keep wanting to escape it, but you're plugged in on fundamental levels.
That is the fundamental problem isnt it?How unfair is it that without my participation Wall street can starve me but it wont make me any richer....so tell me all about how TPP is gonna fix that??

and small business is qualified as "500 employees" in many cases. :stopitslime:

C'mon son. Theres corporations that sell special screws with as many workers. Those aren't any where near mom-and-pop shops.
:pachaha: you have no idea what youre saying
. (For more detailed data see www.sba.gov/advocacy)
half the employer owned firms had less than 20 people

Youre here :cape: for Apple and Nike to get more $ 1.50/hour workers but the small businesses will be wrecked even further by this

Wrong again. The SBA acknowledges 500 people as the threshold at the top end for "small business" many companies fire people just to meet that level too.

And you're talking about wall street as if you'd prefer a weaker dollar. Whats the deal here?

:manny: No one can..direct democracy has never worked...in fact given how ignorant and emotional people can be its actually a dangerous thing in humanity's current state.

@tru_m.a.c what sort of America do you want in the realm of global economics?

Honestly...I was sitting in traffic and thought...why not just bring back the low wage shytty jobs and anyone who wants one, gets one.

Yeah, you may not get an iPhone or be able to afford cable, but you'll be working and making wages.

Yeah, you may not get an iPhone or be able to afford cable, but you'll be working and making wages.

First off, what low wage shytty jobs are you talking about? The manufacturing industry was not low wage, though one could argue the quality of life was shytty. The manufacturing jobs of the 40s, 50s, and 60s are directly responsible for the pensions and health benefits 3 generations of Americans used to boost themselves into the middle class and on to the upper class. Pretty much every aspect of the contract you sign now for a job can be traced back to a union benefit in the past. If I'm not mistaken, the 401k was an alternative to the pension system, as businesses no longer wanted to front the money required for retirement. It was a cost shift mechanism.

Someone has yet to explain to me why the American workforce must decline at the expense of Mexico, South America, or Southeast Asia. You have to explain this.
