First off, what low wage shytty jobs are you talking about? The manufacturing industry was not low wage, though one could argue the quality of life was shytty. The manufacturing jobs of the 40s, 50s, and 60s are directly responsible for the pensions and health benefits 3 generations of Americans used to boost themselves into the middle class and on to the upper class. Pretty much every aspect of the contract you sign now for a job can be traced back to a union benefit in the past. If I'm not mistaken, the 401k was an alternative to the pension system, as businesses no longer wanted to front the money required for retirement. It was a cost shift mechanism.

Someone has yet to explain to me why the American workforce must decline at the expense of Mexico, South America, or Southeast Asia. You have to explain this.
The fact is simply that you slow the acceleration by doing these agreements.

Cause the rest of the world is so much worse off, that in approaching parity, its going to come at our expense sooner or later.

So maybe, Americans have had it too good and aren't willing to go back.

Americans can't have it both ways.

What? You slow the acceleration towards what? Are you implying something here about capitalism? :mjpls:

@tru_m.a.c what sort of America do you want in the realm of global economics?

Honestly...I was sitting in traffic and thought...why not just bring back the low wage shytty jobs and anyone who wants one, gets one.

Yeah, you may not get an iPhone or be able to afford cable, but you'll be working and making wages.

I think this highlights a common misconception of manufacturing. They were hardly shytty jobs. We're not talking about working at McDonalds here. You weren't going to be rich working in manufacturing but that was offset by the low education and skills required. It was low cost, moderate reward both for the worker and the economy.

Simply put there's two paths we can take if we want to look out for everyone:

1. Go free trade crazy but you have to be prepared to educate every single American to compete in the global corporate service world. In essence, make the third world our manufacturing center while we become the world's corporate center. This won't happen anytime soon.

2. Set up enough trade barriers to provide enough manufacturing jobs for those who aren't going to college/have qualifications.

My biggest problem with neolibs is they take incompatible aspects of both. They're not willing to make the education investment and they're not willing to put up trade barriers. Bernie wanted number 2 now in hope that we could one day achieve number 1. Trump wants number 2 now with probably no plan to ever reach number 1. Both are valid positions. On the other hand Clinton supports both free trade and not providing college, leaving lots of people behind. I don't consider that acceptable.

On a side note: we do have too much shyt we feel like we have to buy. Iphones, car, data plan, TV's, computer, washer and dryer, internet, cable etc. It makes us feel poorer then we are.
