shyt has always been baffling. Dude spit some bubble gum bars over an i dream of genie loop, was basically the og skee lo, some other dude wrote summertime, nas ghostwrote his comeback hit, he has made garbage album after garbage album, his pathetic attempts at family friendly pop rap are vomit-worthy, his daughter is on the mic sounding like tracy chapman crossed with eli porter... I mean I get that dude stacked major paper through hollywood, but in terms of rap the homie is corny as fukk.

And if you disagree, I hope Carlton and Geoffrey doubleteam your grandmother.

And if you disagree, I hope Carlton and Geoffrey doubleteam your grandmother.

One thing that Townes had to set the record straight about was a long-held rumor that Rakim had ghostwritten Smith's lyrics on the song. But, as Townes explained, Smith was the sole author.

It's just that the group was at a tricky point in their rap career just before the record dropped, having had lots of crossover success with songs like 'Parents Just Don't Understand.' Their cred among hip-hop purists was waning.

Townes told Smith to not add his name to the beginning of the song in order for rap fans not to dismiss it immediately as a pop tune. Instead, he instructed Smith to use another approach.

"Will was always very hyper and I told him, 'Bring it back. Vibe with it,'" Townes said. "And when he did that, everyone was like, 'Wow. He sounds like Rakim.' From the first day we played the record for people, they thought it was Rakim. When we first released it, everyone was like, 'Did you hear that new song that Rakim did?'"

What do you mean "rap cred"

He's an actor who's starred in classic movies and TV shows, rapping was just a side bytch

Not gonna get mad at that :yeshrug:
:beli: You big dummy.

But I been saying this since SOHH. His music career is trash. Somebody is gonna bring up "Brand New Funk", nobody wil bring up "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson"

Damm OP is harsh, Jeff & Fresh Prince opened doors for alotta peeps, dudes put the work in toured and performed with everyone at the time.

lol hip-hop wasnt everywhere when i was a kid, so to see them dudes do it was big, think they won a grammy when hip hop got NO LOVE at the grammy's.

Plus they was on JIVE which again in the 80's was an alternative to Def Jam, they had BDP, Too Short, Schooly D to name off top

Just on some ol'school shyt really, yeah they wasnt trying to be anything they wasnt, they woulda called out big time for that shyt back in the day, so why hate on them.

Him coming back on the strength of Bel Air was maybe how some peeps see him, but dudes had earned the stripes by then.

Just sayin...

I mean a lot of people act like he's an all time rap great. Which is comedy because he's point blank terrible.

Also, juice said years ago that he and a production team came up with summertime. Will Smith has broken just about every cardinal hip hop rule. nikka is a steaming pile of popcorn drenched in doodoo butter. Carlton was a better dancer too. And Phil was more thugged out. And there's no doubt the og aunt viv was blacker.

Oh, so now sharing a label with better rappers is earning stripes? That nikka was a glorified skee lo. Kid n' Play>>>>>>>corny ass wil smith. And they're basically the rap version of cabbage patch kids.
