Lets assume a virus was created to infects rats a deadly as hiv with the same transmission. I think more harm would happen than good.
Rodents and rats are essential part of the ecosystem. They help fertilize the soil, spread seeds, eat insects, etc. Assuming it would infect all rodents racc00ns, beavers, and other animals would be affected as well.
Although they can be a nuisance in cities they aren't that bad lol. I never have been too afraid of rats.
